When your kids are acting out and showing a behavior flaw your not happy about, what form of punishment is rendered ? What disciplinary action is agreed upon in your household when rules are broken ?

1) A child must NEVER be struck, for any reason
2) Punishment must be applied with love, never with anger.
We raised 3 kids to be responsible, loving adult parents and they got mildly spanked at times.
You may have figured out that I don't like spanking. :-)
If the behavior is bad for the child, there should be some way to make the consequence of that behavior unpleasant for the child. The more the consequences seem to be just a part of the behavior and not your doing something mean to the child the better. Remember when the child was learning to walk. Gravity punished every misstep. Sometimes the child was hurt and cried. But the child never identified you as the enemy and never got angry at gravity. That was just the way things were.
Cyndi B: I'd love to be a fly on the wall when your child throws a tantrum, screaming and kicking its heels and you try speaking to him with respect. I suspect most experienced parents know how that will turn out.
An important distinction that hasn't been made in this discussion is age-appropriate punishment. Time out doesn't work for kids before about age 2. Their reasoning ability is just not up to it. Spanking wouldn't be appropriate for kids older than about 4 or 5 when they're able to understand what's happening.
