Dear Tom, What On Earth Have You Done?

April 12, 2008 07:11 AM EDT (Updated: April 12, 2008 04:51 PM EDT)

It's four o'clock in the morning and I have come to my old friend Gather and something is certainly not right.  I feel as though over the past twenty-four hours I have traveled to a new country and I know not where I am...nor what language is spoken...nothing seems familiar...perhaps this is the same feeling one gets with the onslaught of dementia or alzheimers. Where is everyone?  I hear a constant chatter in the background of some people saying "feed me" but for the life of me, I can't find the refrigerator.

The other day at recess I decided to teach my wee ones the game of Duck, Duck Goose.  You remember the game, Tom...you probably played it long ago in a school yard?  In this game, the children sit down in a circle facing each other.  One child is chosen as "It" and walks around the circle.  As the child walks around, they tap people's heads and say whether they are a "duck" or a "goose".  Once someone is the "goose" they get up and try to chase "it" around the circle.

http://media-files.gather.com/images/d360/d673/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

The goal is to tap that person before they are able to sit down in the "goose's" spot.  If the goose is not able to do this, they become "it"for the next round and play continues.  If the "goose" is able to to tag "it" before "it" sits down, then "it" has to sit in the middle of the circle. They are in what we call the pickle jar.  I can't help but believe you Tom are in the pickle jar.  But then again, maybe that analogy is incorrect...perhaps it is I who  is in the pickle jar staring up at the sky, essentially locked out of the Gather Game.
Sincerely yours,
Ladybess

It has a Facebook feel to it

MySpace has been doing the same things recently with letting you know everything connections are doing. It makes you feel like you are being stalked.

Good analogy, Bob! Yes, yesterday was quite a day here on Gather. I think a majority here made their displeasure with the new upgrade known, and quite loudly, especially about the issue of privacy and how this new upgrade invades it pretty egregiously. Read some of Kathryn's articles from yesterday; she sums up pretty exactly my own feelings. Like her I direct a lot of my professional connections here to look at my work and what I'm up to, and a lot of the trivia now being displayed on our Namespace pages is invasive and juvenile, not exactly the image you want to project when trying to sell someone on your integrity and maturity. It's very sad.

There indeed was a firestorm of protest all day long yesterday. Some of it was done in pretty strong words, some was sarcastic and hilarious. Gather posted a poll on whether we loved the change or hated it. When the numbers went strongly to the "hate it" side, they yanked the poll.

I think it was well planned to be introduced on a Friday morning. They could answer a few questions and then hit the road for the weekend. Too bad you missed the supercilious team members (not all) who kept talking down to us from their lofty perch of superiority.

Awwww - the pictures are adorable! When I used to be a child care provider for my exercise studio, we would play this game forever and the kids loved it. The looks on the children's faces in your photos are priceless. I feel a loss too - each time I log in, I expect it to look like it used to and it has just all these little pictures and so many options. I think that Tom took everyone's suggestions and tried to please every single sqeeky wheel on Gather while the vast majority of us had loved the old system.

Danielle, for the life of me, I can't get comfortable in this new Gather. Papa is beginning to like the Update...though he is not a Gatherite. As he just said, "Wow, since you are not on Gather, you have been going through the house like a tornado....cleaning the computer room, vacuuming the whole house, scrubbing the kitchen floor, changing the linens on the bed and scouring the three johns. Maybe Tom should of done this upgrade a year ago!"

Ummmph!

Janet...come on over and play Duck, Duck Goose....nothing else is happening here at my house today. I have the "makings" for four stories in my head right now but am completely frustrated with the whole Gather experience right now. I feel like I have found myself in the girl's room at the local high school listening to all the gossip about who got laid last night...I mean pinged last night.

I loved your article...it was done with a good spirit...
I feel that Gather started as content-based and has gone over to the social side That doesn't work when I have 200+ connections...I can't imagine how it is for people who connected with a thousand! Knowing every move of 200+ is driving me batty and hiding the things I might enjoy.
Another negative...select articles and the people publishing are highlighted, not the article name. There are some people who I read/view everything they publish because I know what to expect from them. Others I may just read when interested.

Thanks, Kathryn...maybe I will write Jason Keaveny a letter too. Better yet, maybe I will invite him over to play Red Rover, Red Rover......the Gather Team can be on one side....and all who hate the Update on the other....the game ends, when all participants are in one line, hopefully ours and then the winning team gets to choose what Gather will look and feel like.

What a mess! I can't even ping anyone anymore! I've been de-pinged. But to answer your question, nothing will be done. It's already been done to us, and some knucklehead at gather decided that "change" means "progress." A pox on them! But where else can we take our writing? I'm with elizabeth e! But duck, duck goose is only fun if your brothers are not POUNDING your head on the "goose." A good analogy, come to think of it -- I feel like I'm being repeatedly pounded on the head by gather, who can't seem to leave well enough alone.

Melanie, I think Team Gather has a Big Head and a little brain as opposed to little arms....did they not do the demographics of their Gather members. Or perhaps they did and thought they needed to attract a younger population since they thought we were ready to be cremated and scattered in the wind. When I look at my home page, I feel like I've already been scattered!

The change is a shock, elizabeth. I'd been really busy and came on to a totally bizarre site, full of babble and clickies and much too much clutter. I'm used to going to "My Gather" and clicking on my friends articles for several pages. Can't do that now. Perhaps this is the end of my being a Gatherite....................

Let's see ... to accentuate the positive, there are two new changes that I like, if Gather will tweak them to work properly:

1) View counts -- this is interesting information (although not particularly useful*). What I find it odd that you give users "an improvement" that doesn't work in real time -- there is a lag and you will notice the "count" doesn't always add up (i.e. you will have 20 ratings, 20 comments, but only 16 views). So currently this "improvement" is a distraction and annoyance to those who find the numbers aren't making any sense.

I DO like having a view count, but I would MUCH rather have something more useful ... like page numbers on people's work. This would make it so much easier to navigate; to go to page number 6, rather than have to hit "Next" five times and wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

Now, continuing to look at the positive:

2) Spotlighting --- I really like this feature!

However, we need to be able to "spotlight" whatever we want and currently we can't go back further than 20 days or so.

Also, in order to spotlight, one has to wade through that terrible feed thing to get to the photos or articles and hit the "spotlight" button when you've finally found it.

Wouldn't it make more sense to go to the article you want to spotlight, hit "edit" and then find a "spotlight" button next to your "publish" button.

These are things that make simple, elegant sense to me.

However, as for the rest of it... sigh. What a mess. The first thing I want to clean up is that horrible feed box.

The LAST THING I WANT TO READ ON GATHER is who is getting pinged by whom and who is making friends. So if we could have a drop down box to control what mess is being splashed in that box, that would help a lot!

Roy..."invasive and juvenile" is a much better description of the new Gather but in the end, in my mind, it just doesn't feel comfortable. The Home page is cluttered...I'm confused...too many choices...and so I have done nothing for the past twenty-four hours. Did I go and comment on my connections in the 100 word drabble...no, couldn't find them yesterday morn. They must have fallen into the black hole of Gather or the 8th day came and they are making their passage to the next realm.

Wilma, I need to go to the Highest Rated page and view for myself the Firestorm. I've been off Gather pretty much since yesterday morn when Magi, on skype, tried to "walk me through" the changes. Then both of us gave up in frustration. Last night around 10 I tried again...reposted an article I had done a year ago as an experiment to see who could find it. An hour after I posted, I had one comment. At 4 in the morning, still only one hit. People did find it today after I posted my Dear Tom letter.

Adorable pictures. It's great that you have the space for the kids to play outdoors. My mom taught kindergarten in Dorchester, and had a playground littered with trash and broken glass to deal with.

As for the Gather thing, I can live with it and I think it has the potential to improve in the future, but I'm hard-pressed to call this an "upgrade".

A wonderfully simple tale that I fear will be lost on our chief, bob. Almost all of my friends agree that this drastic change toward remaking Gather´s image has been an unqualified disaster. But that is because it is a disaster for US, the older demographic of people that genuinely thought they were joining a writer´s community first and foremost, that likes clean, uncluttered user interfaces-- essentially what your son provided in the first Gather incarnation, rather than a busy, cluttered babblethon that is so hyperactive I forgot to take my ritalin while I was staring at the screen.

The pictures of Duck Duck goose are lovely. Gather is not so lovely. I get a headache just looking at all the "crap" oh I mean useless info pasted on my page. I don't really care that susie is now friends with tom, dick and harry!

And as for your comment: "I can't get comfortable with....how can I conduct my adulterous affairs in private anymore when all of Gather will know when I make connections or get pinged? " I hear you sister, that is for the birds. I kept looking for a way to shut all that stuff off. Then I was thinking, do I disconnect friendships with everyone because I don't need to know when someone pinged them etc. ???

Well now I am going to play duck duck goose!

I know exactly how you feel because I feel it too.

Nothing works, who the heck cares if so-and so pings what's his name and I could care less who invites who as a friend.

I was trying to play the game but can't figure out for the life of me how to feature my work (on my own space).

The left side of my space is blank because all the type is shoved off to the right and there is only the first letter of each line showing - god only knows what those words are or say (well maybe Tom does)

Is it supposed to be friendlier? If it is, it doesn't make the grade.

Thanks for posting this to BEST ORIGINAL PHOTOS,ART AND WRITING FOR 2008.

Instead of all of the useless columns of search word
frequencies and useless stats of the members on my
home page? (crazy, truly nuts!)why couldn't that space
be simply designed to have what I choose on it, my bio
and I'd love to just have a front page with the titles to all
of my poems so that people could just pick one easily and go.
The design excess and redundancy utilized in the new
update looks like it was done by some newbie grad school
designer who just wanted to show all the tricks that hadn't
been done yet to make it look "new and exciting". I cannot
fathom who this is designed for and am continually frus-
trated by modern design philosophy that fast forwards everything
into upgraded garbage, simply because we can, catapulting
the still efficient and only recently familiarized into extinc-
tion. This "feed" stuff feels like fast food thrills to me...
a menu of cheap and unsating fare to plague your
insides with a chemistry that was never supposed to
even beckon your eyes or mouth. I am truly shocked this
time, speechless.

Pretty cute, great pictures, though I have to admit I've never heard of it before. Sounds a bit like musical chairs?
Gather tried to cram new features into it, no doubt to increase page views for advertising revenue perhaps, and stepped on it. "You asked for it, tell us what you think"... yeah right, ha ha. Who asked for it like that?
It's not the features so much as how they did it, and for the life of me can't believe they can put the two formats of "My Gather" page side by side and say the new one is better in my mind.
Designers get defensive of their work, it's "their baby" after all, so they don't listen to users well. I see it in industry all the time. Too bad really.... because it still stinks to me, ugly too.. ha ha.
Take care, quack quack..... ;-)

Couldn't agree more Laura:

"This "feed" stuff feels like fast food thrills to me...
a menu of cheap and unsating fare to plague your
insides with a chemistry that was never supposed to
even beckon your eyes or mouth. I am truly shocked this
time, speechless."

Nice to see your comment on my page Laura...I remember seeing your beautiful thoughts on my son Will's page many times. You have such a wonderful way with words...and are always so perceptive.

I found you elizabeth by seeing your comment on another article, so clicked on your name, and then had to click on articles to see this, I just don't get the whole thing, and I don't think friends can find us either, as I am not getting comment like I used to, and I am having trouble finding out how to go to my friends sites. I hope something is fixed and soon. Take care Elizabeth, I hope you had a good walk with Tuck, and I remember that game, and your photos are great as usual, Sucks is the word for the upgrade.

I've been out of the loop for quite a while now, and when I came back I did kinda wonder what the heck has been going on.
The focus seems to be shifting to the social networking side of things now, rather than the content, and I admit it reminds me of a bunch of girlfriends sitting around and chattering about who did what to whom:
"and Mary said that Angela totally dissed Fiona, so Fiona said she was gonna tell Rebecca about what Angela thinks about..."
You get the idea. Background Noise.
Also, cannot say I've ever played Duck Duck Goose. I don't think I'd last five minutes at it either... I'm still trying to figure out the rules.

elizabeth e, I got tickled reading your comment about your husbanding mentioning you going through the house like a tornado. Earlier today I mentioned in a comment Gather was good for dusting in my house, in that I get so frustrated I keep getting off and doing some housework. This just is not going to do. I can tell now. Gather was wonderful before, but this is now a huge nuisance. I hate it to, because I have made some very valuable friends, but I can't stand being on here and trying to get from point a to point b. If we'd wanted myspace or facebook, we'd be there now. The entire Gather powers that be need to be replaced. I don't believe they know what they are doing. Unless, myspace or facebook wannabe is more profitable. And I'm all for profit, but this just isn't for me.

I've had maybe one or two comments since this happened. I had finally come up with a good article, planning it out, photo essay, really, and now I don't see the point in posting it except that it is for someone, and for her, it is worth it. But I sort of got lost out there in no man's land.

Magi the magical poet is riding the wind again Apr 12, 2008, 7:27pm EDT
I hadn't heard of 'Duck, Duck Goose', but with the Gather update, Tom is killing the goose that laid the golden egg and thus he also is the goose.

I couldn't help but notice how quickly the Gather poll was pulled...the results were damning the changes.

For my part, I have switched of the ping facility and deleted all pings...that has helped to unclutter my namespace page - try it folks, and see for yourselves the big difference.

I forgot to mention that I like the spotlighting idea - allowing us to feature our own work on our home pages. But the spotlight facility needs unscrambling so that it actually works (on my page, it locks up when trying to move from page one). Also tweak it so that we can spotlight an article from anywhere...just as we can edit and delete an item.

John F. Walter:

A Tower of Babel it tis...a cluttered interface with everyone blabbing on my homepage so that I am completely confused as to where I want to go. Too many choices...too many people...and I'm having a difficult time concentrating and doing what I like to do best.

I do wish Gather would just tell us who and what they want to be? Do they want to be a social networking site or a serious place for writers to come together and support one another in constructive and serious conversations.

Linda K.:

I think you have missed your calling. You would have made a great teacher. You looked at the new upgrade and critiqued it well...first noting the positive: View counts and Spotlighting. I too like those changes. At one point today I thought it was interesting that I had 33 comments but 57 views. I began wondering who was viewing and not commenting? Could some of those "viewings" actually be Gather Team members listening in on the thoughts of Gatherites.... that may be a good think if they listen objectively.

I think the new update has some real problems with privacy issues....and the cluttered user interfaces. I'm hoping Team Gather takes a serious look at the new update and tweak it. Kathryn has some really good ideas.

If Gather would only realize they have a community of writers and photographers who have been most appreciative in the past of what Gather stood for...I remember Will explaining the concept...he was so excited. Has GAther lost focus of it's mission? And if they have...should they just not be honest and tell us "Hey guys, the rides over...we want this to be a social networking site." Then I guess we would leave and find someplace else....but holy, moly I sure did love the old Gather!

KS: I will look. I saw your petition. Thanks.

Bob: Gayle - G Nikon told me that Pam said yesterday on her article that Gather will NOT BE DELETING THE NEW FEATURES, they want our feedback but THINGS WILL STAY THE WAY THEY ARE.

Did you see Rose W.'s article? She had gone to the pings of Gather staffers - and their attirude was downright embarassing, based on the quotes she used from the pings...If that is not a recommendation for private pings, I don't know what else is.

I DO NOT know what is WRONG with Gather to make NEWS FEEDS not OPTIONAL, pings NOT private and to state that they will noT be making changes.

Sounds like self-obsessed obstinancy, to me.
