In an article I wrote yesterday evening, I showed the flowers I purchased with my Gather and My Points Home Depot gift cards. If you didn't catch that article, you can check it out here.
For some strange reason I thought the rain was supposed to come in last night rather than tonight. Rather than having them wait to be planted, I got a wild hair and got the task completed this morning.

The space in this photo between the lillies is actually one of my dead azalea bushes. My mother told me not to yank them until I tried cutting them down and miracle growing the crap out of them. So I trimmed the two dead ones to about 1.5" out of the ground and treated them. We'll see if they come back to life or not. I'm not very hopeful, but at least I can tell mom I tried.

I also have some kind of bulbed flowers shooting up at various locations in the pine straw bed. So I tried to plant around those. I think the lillies will be nice in a few years when they fill in. I'd like to get at least 2 more for this area.

This space along the driveway is usually filled with whatever is cheap and bunnies don't like. I decided the petunias and phlox would go here. I could still use about 3 more plants in this area. Again, if they last, they should fill in better within the next few weeks. This shot also shows the pink flowers that bloom on the railroad ties every year.

New plantings always look kind of hapless for the first week.

This upper bed always held impatents and pansies. I decided to try the leafy stuff in here too since the tags said to plant with impatents, which always have thrived in this location. Within a few weeks these should be about 4-times the size they are now.

I'd like to get two more of these regrowing leafy plants for this area as well. We'll see how these do first since they were $5 each.
If this stuff survives, I'll post some updated photos in a few weeks.

Good Job Marianne.
J R, it's suppose to rain tonight and tomorrow.
I have black mulch, actually it is grey right now. I was told it holds the heat. Is it better to use pine straw??? A neighbor suggested I use it. It looks better than I thought it would. Your photos are great!
Thanks for sharing your great pictures.
Instead of paying $5 for a plant - you can get them at a garden center as a bulb for 50 cents. They also come in a giant leaf variety and those bulbs cost more but look great - I didn't know that either until I saw a really nice big one and wondered why mine was smaller.
I forgot to buy any this year so I have to rely on what came back from last year. I don't think they last forever, but they are perennials. In your climate you might have to take them out of the ground in winter - I don't know about that.
There's a caladium pic in my latest garden article, it was supposed to be a white one but has a few speckles of pink and lots of green too.
I took some pics of the white and green Caladiuams today - not sure if they came out well enough for an article.
Anyway - looking good - should look great when it is all filled in and mabe those azaleas will make a come back too. I threatened mine one year and then they did great the following year.
Rose, they say we can dig up our bulbs, but most of the time no one does. The pine bedding protects them from the deep freeze for the most part. We don't stay frozen down here long enough to have to dig them up.
If I can find it on the new GatherBook.
Did I mention that I dislike some of the update?
