BT Accusation

I was reading the comments on my hedgehog picture over on Boomertowne in the photo contest.  (http://www.boomertowne.com/PhotoContests/View.aspx?id=64)  Apparently, someone thinks this is not MY pet.  I guess they are accusing me of getting this pictures from another website (Gather perhaps??) and that it is not mine.  I can't believe someone would not think you could possibly post one of your favorite pictures on two different sites.  If they look at the usernames they are almost identical, except I had to add a 1 to the end at BT.  If you suspected a picture was stolen would you publically announce it (unfounded) or would you privately email and ask if it is posted on another site as well?

I don't know how I would handle it. Though most people come right out and just accuse the person. I really don't like confrontation but I will do it if I have to.

By the way the hedgehog is cute. Is he a lot of work?

Could you simply write to the support group at BT and explain the situation to them so they could clear it up for you? That's lousy - I'm really sorry it happened to you.

I wouldn't do or say anything unless someone was snatching my photo. I think so much of that goes on online. People lack integrity. It's a shame someone accused you though.

Thanks everyone! BT hasn't said anything yet, but I did post a reply that he is my own pet. I just don't understand why someone would make that accusation.

Ang, they are pretty easy to care for. They are about the same as a Guinea Pig I'd say. You do have to clean cages, but they don't make any messes in the house.

Amanda - Take your pick: copy rights - jealousy - infringements - plagerism. All of it rampant on the !nternet.

Whenever you enter a pic in a contest it is probably a good idea to use a pic that has not been published before or clearly state that you have also published elsewhere. It avoids conflict.

Anyway, I am not a member at BT and don't plan to be but I suppose all you have to do is respond that yes indeed the same photos are posted elsewhere on the Internet. Annoying nevertheless, and although there should be no repercussions it may leave a questionmark - as innocent as the whole thing is.....

I do love that pic Amanda and hope your hedgie wins the number one spot! Go hedgie!!!:)

I understand just how you feel. Another Gather member accused one of my pieces of not being my original work because I had posted it to another site before posting it here on Gather. She even went so far as to say that because the work had text on it identifying the site where I had published it, and because she was too busy to check her facts, she had every reason to assume that it was "from the Internet" and "not worthy" of her forum. The funny thing was, I had posted that same photo to that same forum without the words on it without such a reaction, and I had other photos with text which she had not assumed were not mine. I pointed out these facts, but the group owner had made up her mind all ready. I was "banished" from the group. This was a user who justified her judgmental attitude by saying she didn't have time to make sure she was right, and therefore the burden of proof was on me, existing before I had reason to believe she thought I was posting someone else's work. I say if she doesn't have time to run her group properly, she should leave the photo editing up to someone who actually knows what they are doing.
Some of the writing I have posted online is 10 years old, and I have been putting it up in forums for 10 years. Some of my photos are close to that... 8 or 9... yet I do occasionally have people suggest that because they have seen it in one of my other favorite posting forums, it isn't my work, even when they have seen it under the same username.
I think some people are just snobs, who can't imagine that work which is not theirs could be better than theirs, or be good enough or interesting enough to have been published elsewhere before it is used it the place they're seeing it now.

The hedgehog photo is truly adorable, and quite deserving of the prize! Congratulations!

I'm not sure what you can do except for posting like you did. if it does come down to it you can prove it is yours.
Maybe they thought if they accused you openly by the picture people won't vote for you.
It isn't nice if that is what they are doing.

I wouldn't accuse without proof, no. I might ask if I'm wondering, but in an open way (hey, did I see this on gather, too?), but not claim, unless I was sure and had links to back up my statement.

This accusation is rather silly considering Jerri's comment in prominence on the front page of your comments that she'd seen the picture here and loves it. I had to wonder if, from there, they leapt to a faulty conclusion while trying to be a p.i.t.a.

I had a vote left for today and you got it, while I was over there checking out the drama. ;)

People are weird. I've quit trying to figure them out. Who knows why they do anything they do. That is a GREAT picture! Apparently the only way you can ensure that everyone knows a photo belongs to you is to put your own face in it. Now if your face was behind that hedgehog then you could say "Look! See! There I am! It has to be my photo!" LOL Just kidding!!!

I am seeing a lot of this behavior and it drives me crazy!! There is a private message function for a reason people. Don't out someone for something that may not even be true it just make you look bad when the truth comes out. Plus the person that gets accused has a new reputation they didn't ask for. It really makes me MAD!!! This happened to a friend of mine here on gather recently-I was sooo angry. I still want to have one!!

Sorry you were falsely accused. But plagerism does happen...even in the best families. I wrote a poem about angels around ten years ago. Several times since it has been returned to me in Christmas cards (with no byline). After I got over being miffed I was glad to see the poem so widely circulated, right down to a spelling error I'd made.

I am sorry about what happened to you someone being ridiculous enough to accuse you of stealing your images instead of assuming that you posted this picture more than 1 place. I know some sites dont allow you to post images or articles to more then one place as once its on their site its considered their content. This probably isnt the case with yours and even if it was the case they shouldnt have come out and made a scene about it they should have just sent you a message privately or contacted the head of boomertown or whatever.

I would correct them that you are the same person! Maybe they were trying to help but totally went about it the wrong way! When they find out its the same persons pictrue and that it was not stolen then they would hopefuly apologize and next time look into it before saying something! It would be anokay thing if someone had stolen it from you.. I think they went about "helping" the wrong way.. ya know what I mean.. I love the pictrue too though!

I voted for your photo on BT and knew it was yours. I saw them on Gather.

That is one reason I copyright almost all of my photos before I publish them. I don't want there to be any question about ownership. And when someone want to buy my work, there is no question if it's seen elsewhere, its been stolen.

It reminds me of some of the people at BT now going around posting on people's pictures that they posted for the graduation theme saying "I"m not voting on this picture because it's not YOUR graduation picture." I think that is so stupid because 1) Not everyone is lucky enough to have a graduation picture and wants to post a loved ones and 2) if Boomertowne really only wanted it to be the person's graduation picture, they wouldn't not let the other ones go through.
