This story is all the buzz the past few days. Ever since Thomas Beatie and his wife Nancy appeared on Oprah to tell their story and are featured in this week's People magazine, everyone's talking about the "Pregnant Man." In case you haven't heard the story, Thomas was born a woman named Tracy and then decided in his twenties that he was in the wrong body and should have been a man. He had surgery to have his breasts removed and took testosterone which helped him grow a beard and get a more manly appearance. He's considered transgendered and legally a man. Since he's legally a man, he was able to marry his wife. His wife is unable to have children and they desperately wanted a child of their own. But, the good news is that Thomas never had his female reproductive organs removed, so he was able to carry the child.
Now, through the help of a sperm donor, Thomas is 6 months pregnant with a baby girl that the couple is expecting in July. People have mixed feelings about this pregnancy. Thomas even had a difficult time finding a doctor who would give him medical care for the pregnancy.
Some people have even called his baby an abomination, and told him that his child would be a monster.
But, I have to wonder how many women would LOVE it if their husbands could be pregnant instead of them. Imagine if your husband had to endure morning sickness, hemmoroids, bloating, weight gain, labor, delivery, etc. Wouldn't that be a nice change of pace?
This couple seems to be very much in love and very devoted to each other, and in truth, love is the most important thing a child needs to thrive. So, what's so wrong with this?
What is your take on this pregnant man? Do you support this couple's desire to have children in this way?
