As some of you may or may not know I offer a lecture titled Spiritual Lessons from Science Fiction at various festivals around the country. I am currently working on a book of the same title that details the many ways in which Science fiction offers us vital lessons and serves great importance in our lives. One of my favorite parts of the lecture is when I go around the audience and ask them which characters truly speak to them. Participants report they identify with Data, from Star Trek the Next Generation for example, because he allows the to explore the differences between man and machine, or Whorf from the same show because he allows them to get in touch with their primal aggressive side. Who are your favorite characters? Why and how do they inspire you? In many ways these images allow us to expand our own imagination and 'follow the fantasy.' Thanks everyone in advance for transporting to my rescue, and helping me explore new frontiers of this issue. And for those interested I will be offering this lecture next at the Gathering of the Tribes festival in Virginia over Memorial Day 2008 weekend.
