This is my version of hamburger helpers - flavor lasagna. As I have found out it is much cheaper for me to add stuff to make the meal go further. Than it is to make it from scratch.
1 box of lasagna hamburger helper
1/2 pound of hamburger
4 slices of cheese
4 cups of water
2 to 3 cups of extra pasta
Additional spices for flavoring (I like to use everglades seasoning)
Fry the hamburger up. Drain off grease. Add hamburger back to frying pan. Add water, all ingredients provided in the box of lasagna hamburger helper. Add in extra pasta. Mix up together. Let come to a boil for 5 to 10 minutes. (make sure pasta is tender) Add four slices of cheese to top of dish. Let melt than mix together. Add in extra spices for flavoring. Than set pan aside for 10 minutes before serving. The liquid will set up. So, it is thicker. That is why you need to let it set before serving.
Now the break down in cost to feed a family of four.
You need your register receipts to figure this out:
1 box of lasagna hamburger helper = 25 cents
1/2 pound of hamburger = 25 cents
4 slices of cheese = 3 cents
4 cups of water
2 to 3 cups of extra pasta = 13 cents
Additional spices for flavoring (I like to use everglades seasoning)
This equeals out to 66 cents per servings.
What did you have for dinner? Do you know what it cost per serving?

But I did get a bargin for a dollar a box. The local Winn Dixie has sales going on where it was 10 boxes for 10 bucks. I bought 5 hamrburger helper and 5 tuna helper. I ended giving half the boxes to a family that needed it more than us at the moment.
I do what is called a pantry challenge. Where you try and get your food budget down as much as possible and make the meal you create as cheap as possible. I managed with this meal. I mean where else would I be able to take my kids and myself out to eat for 66 cents a person?
And I don't know what dinner cost tonight, but I used to break it down like that just to see.
homemade pizza for supper tonight.
We are having rice with carrots and grilled chicken in it.
this is a great reminder for me.
I always doctor recipes and add my own ingredients. (large family)
Your recipe probably tastes much BETTER too.
(real cheese & your own spices!!)
I hope to see more recipes from you soon.
