Today, my son and I decided to go see "Superhero Movie" which was supposed to be PG-13 (he is 12-1/2) and starred his favorite tv star Drake Bell.
"Superhero Movie" is a take-off of super hero films such as Spiderman. Drake Bell stars as a high school student who gets bitten by a dragonfly that has its genetics played around with. He then starts to exhibit superhero traits such as walking on the sides of buildings, dodging bullets, and things like that. He decides to use these powers to get the girl next door who is dating a big B.M.O.C.
It is a cute movie with a lot of the usual signs of a Zucker Brothers film - fart jokes, bodily function jokes in general, and the usual bumping into things, cars coming out of nowhere to hit people in funny ways, etc. If you've seen the old movies such as "Airplane" and "Naked Gun" with Leslie Nielsen (who is also a star of this film) then you know what this is like.
I loved those old films of the 70's and 80's. The difference between those and this one is...mild cursing. Yes, a lot of the S word and even the F word 2x. Now I'm an old girl from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn where the F-word is as common as the word "it" so this is nothing new to me but I am a mom now. My son doesn't like cursing. He doesn't curse. He hates it when I do. He was astounded to hear these words out of Drake's mouth. Now, I know it was part of the script, but why allow it in a PG-13 movie? Do the producers and writers feel that 13 year olds these days can deal well with curses? I am no prude, mind you, but I was still astounded by this.
I think that the movie would've been just as good without all that. Not necessary to lower yourself by cursing throughout the movie. It wasn't just in one section of the film but throughout. It was meant to be a joke too. It was used in funny ways.
Does anyone else feel the same way about this flick or is it just me? I love Drake Bell, and have been a big fan of "Drake & Josh" and "The Amanda Show" on Nickleodeon for years. I know that he is trying to strike out of that Nickleodeon thing as he is now over the age of 20 but to curse?
I guess it is just me. My husband didn't think it was a big deal and in the 19 years we've been together he has cursed exactly 3x. He is not a curser and is from a family with very clean mouths. My family had filthy mouths.
