Geocaching in Arizona
(All photos taken with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8)
Robert and I bought a GPS for our combined gift to each other for our anniversary coming up April 14th. We've slowly been learning how to use it but only from our home because Robert has been sick with the flu bug.
Today, Robert was still not feeling well and I was invited to go with our friends on a quad ride. I felt bad leaving Robert at home but he wanted me to go and try out the new GPS.
Although I missed Robert's company I had a blast. We ended up going on my very first Geocache hunt, which helped me to learn some of the functions of the GPS.
The first cache was a bit of a walk. We hiked in almost a mile but about halfway there we realized that we could have taken the road to within 150 feet of it. Most of the maps now don't show the smaller roads and it's really annoying. Oh well a good two mile hike for me is exercise that I can use. I'll bet I sleep well tonight.
I found the first cache, Chuck took it out of hiding, and we all rummaged through the contents. I didn't take or leave anything because this time I didn't bring anything to put into it. Next time I will though.
The second cache Chuck ended up finding first. We got within a tenth of a mile to this one. The road up is steep but worth the trip. The views are breathtaking and we felt like we were on top of the world. Again, I didn't take or leave anything but it was so much fun signing the logbook that others will see when they find it.

I really like this geocache game and the GPS so we'll see if we end up having time to pursue it.
When we got back to the trucks after our 20 mile quad drive we were greeted by turkey vultures no doubt on cleanup duty. There was also some really weird fuzzy looking ant thing running around. Arizona has the strangest bugs. LOL.

Glad you had fun, and had fun friends to go with. Your photos are great.
Thanks for posting this to Best Original Photos, Art and Writing for 2008.
LOL, Debby, you better get over here to visit soon.
Randall: Yep, it is the updated version of scavenger hunt and people from all over the world play it.
LOL, Mom. I don't want it again either. I'll tell him that you will give him a hug later when he gets better.
Thanks.
I'd love for you to explain what "Geocaching" is, Toni... I've never heard of it before...
And that fuzzy, red ant thingy is DEFINITELY very strange!
(Sorry it's taken me so long to comment on your article but, I've been offline for almost a week now due to problems with my IP and am just now going through all of my contacts' articles... jean)
Jean: Geocaching is a game where people hide "caches" (containers) all over the U.S. (or the world for all I know). They log the coordinates at a website and people use their GPS units or whatever to find the hidden caches. The caches usually have little trinkets inside. If you take an item out you are supposed to replace that item with something of yours. I'm finding that I'm getting a lot of exercise doing this and although I've only done a few of them I'm finding it a really fun thing to do. Oh yeah, some of the caches are "virtual caches" meaning that there isn't necessarily a container involved but rather a place to see.
