Heroes We Need

For those who may not know it, California is facing a budget crisis. Due to extensively losses in tax revenues, the Governator has made across the board cuts. It affects education. It affects roads. It affects hospitals. It affects pork barrel projects. But most of all it affects education. It affects our future generations.

It's the same everywhere, Matt. When I lived in Michigan a few years back, we heard every day about how the state was bankrupt. At the end of the month, you couldn't talk to any state workers. Many were given the last 1 or 2 days of the month off without pay. Strange. And yet...the lawmakers always got theirs.

But, on the other hand... There are so many people working in education now. When I was in school, our high school had 2500 kids. We had one principal, one VP and 3 counselors. The office had 3 secretaries, and they didn't have computers to keep track of things.

Today that same school would have 4 VPs, 6 counselors (and they don't help with career testing???), and an office staff of about 6-8.

The county next to ours cannot afford to maintain any of its roads or do ANY type of infrastructure maintenance. They spent their entire year's budget on building a new prison and arguing a lawsuit with the power company over a zoning dispute...

Our elementary schools shared music, art and language teachers. These teachers were assigned 3-4 schools. Same thing in jr. high - these kinds of teachers split their time between 2 schools.

i went to high school in Massachusetts. we had more than this--these numbers are frightening, as are what they say about the country we live in.

and, more to the quick... the people in charge.

Thomas Jefferson said that we should have a revolution every fifteen years, give or take--he thought this only healthy.

i'm beginning to agree.

Its always sad when everybody is affected with crisis. I think we have the same problem in our country now.
