As Dubya ponders the failure of his missions to terminate ancient cultures in Afghanistan and Iraq and seeks to understand why his highly trained and expensively equipped army regiments have failed to subdue resistance from raggle - taggle militias I think I have stumbled on the answer.
Instead of looking to Al Qaeda, The Mahdi Army, covert Saudi operations and a conspiracy between the Cheese Eating Surrender Monkeys and the Chinese, President Bush need look no further for the culprits than The Pentagon.
To paraphrase what Bill Clinton once said to Pappy Bush, "Its the Bullets Stupid."
Were I the Commander in chief I would be asking WTF the Department were thinking of when they awarded a contract to supply arms and munitions worth $300million to a one man company named AEY run by a small time con - man and fraudster out of a mail drop address in Miami?
Efriam Diversoli (22) tendered for the contract to supply guns and bullets to the U.S. military and on being awarded the contract managed to fulfil the requisition by supplying hardware sourced from stockpiles in former Soviet republics that he found for sale on the internet.
The equipment was poorly made, obsolete and had deteriorated badly after being stored in unsuitable conditions. The guns didn't shoot straight and the bullets often didn't fire.
This goes a long way towards explaining many things I think.
For readers bemused by critical comments on a previous thread in which the critic kept telling me he didn't like the way I did certain things and why I should change and I kept stonewalling, here is an insight into why I do certain things certain ways.
I have just spent a couple of minutes with this article removing a few redundant words and phrases and replacxing them with other redundant words and phrases. So now the content of this page, though essentially the same as articles that appear on my other blogs, will not be identified as duplicate content by search engines.
Things are seldom what they seem and to me Gather is just a valuable link to other sites where I get many, many more page views. Creative writing may be an art in some circumstances but writing for the web is a science and we can only try to fuse the two.

Just love the YouTube video dealing with the mafia connections.
One of my senators, unfortunately, is that hawk Lieberman who laps up around Bush's feet, and is now doing the same with McCain. Let's see if he responds to my "this is outrageous!" email to him demanding immediate action on this theft of $300M of taxpayers' money.
Sandy, the idiots are not hard to predict. It's not psychic ability...

The whole thing reminds me of the movie, "Catch 22." Particularly, the corruption, profiteering and disregard for the lives of the kids who are in harm's way.
Thanks for the article, Ian.

With a title like that, how can I not read?
@ top comment: he had been in a rehab programme.
"He used to be a small - time crook so let's teach him how to write business proposals and tenders. Oh look, now he'a a big time crook."
What a negative attitude. What you should expect is highly paid Pentagon officials to do the job they are paid for.
Sheryl psychic? I've noticed that too. I'll ask her what is going to win the Grand National Steeplechase tomorrow.
Underestimating the enemy was bad, but clearly they also overestimated the competence of US Military administrators (don't worry, we're no better in Britain.)
@ 2nd comment. I know about Lieberman. Funny thing though, I always thought conservsatism was about fiscal competence. But then Labour used to be the People's party in Britain, now they are the party of Rupert Murdoch.
My daughter reminded me last night about the Pentagon official who was "in bed" literally with a high-level exec at Boeing and helped them get contracts, with the promise of a high-paying job at Boeing upon completion (not sure what "completion" means in this exact case). Whatever happened to ethics? Is ANYbody honest anymore? Or, does anything go if more money is involved?
As Sheryl predicted many people (and we saw one) will shrug their shoulders at the waste of taxpayers money and applaud the kid for "livin' the 'mercan dream."
Wait...I knew the Brits were all a bit daft, but chasing steeples? Aren't they pretty easy to catch?
You could use a mass mail to all members of the house of Representatives.
That was my very thought. Milo Mindbender or something I think the character was named. The war was just one big racket. That was a classic book.
You'll have to tell me about Canadian Bacon. Does it gow in the dark like Cumbrian herrings (the nuclear waste reprocessing plant is on the Cumbrian coast in northern England.
Nice to see you.
Good thing us poets aren't obsessed with money, we'd get nowhere.
Go on you little rabble rouser, whip 'em up.
Thanks, I hope it was a wry laugh because its bad for the boys in the front line. But satire is a very potent political weapon.
In my experience "completion" means the brown envelope filled with used banknotes will be handed over once our invoices have been settled.
I accepted "hospitality" many times but only after the contract had been awarded. Nothing wrong with allowing people to say "thank you."
Awarding a contract in return for a "bung" though is professional suicide. You have no control over your contractors.
Chasing steeples? They're not easy to catch if you have to ride a horse four and a quarter miles and jump 30 difficult fences.
The name of this type of horseracing goes way back when farmers would pick out a distant steeple and ride cross country to it. Now professionals race round prepared tracks and its much more organised.
I've bet £10 win and place on Bewley's Berry at 20 to 1.
(BTW, I was only kidding about the steeplechase....geez...I watch Mary Poppins when I was a kid.)
I like Michael Moore but I haven't heard of Canadian Bacon. I'll look out for it.
He's way off about a safe war with Canada though. Last war between USA and Canada (around 1812 I think) the Canadians won. They marched on Washington DC and set fire to it.
Thats just spoiling the joke...and it sounds like a pretty lame excuse from the Pentagon.
Anyway, I know Russian armaments manufacturers are always keen bto supply the west although they no longer take Levi's in payment. So why not go direct and cut out the middle man. That way they could have bought stuff that worked for the same price as Diversoli sold them the crap.

Nothing thrilling going on here.
