Look. Hurry.
A tentative glance
over the haphazard pile of reference books
disguising the table,
her pale cheeks flushed red
with the thought that she could entice him
to turn away from the vapid, elderly, coffee-counter clerk
and allow his gaze to stop
on her instead.
She observes him furtively, feeling invisible
in her well-worn cardigan and wire-rimmed glasses.
He cannot decide between a low-fat blueberry muffin
or a raspberry scone.
See me,
she thinks and it almost blooms aloud,
because he's finished, he's paying the bill,
he pivots and glides toward the exit,
and she notices his lovely blue eyes
like faceted gemstones behind display glass,
just out of her reach.
~~a poem I wrote in response to an exercise in which I had to use the following words: tentative, red, face, hurry, lovely, stop, books, decide
