This is on the boat. Selllers are displaying their wares. Note the rich hues.

Woman at a loom, weaving. We sometimes fail to appreicate the hours of labor and the love of labor that goes into a hand-woven tapestry.

Woman walking into town with her wares. She walks miles and miles per day to sell her wares - the cloths shown on the boat. This is how she feeds her family. Often, it is pennies per day.

Her she is outside the cafe where my husband was eating. She is trying to get him to buy her cloths. He gave her a few dollars and she was very happy. She is selling the large blankets, which he could not take back with him. He did buy a few small cloths later, in a shop.

Village, late afternoon, toward dusk.

Boats, mountains, clouds.

Village tucked away in the side of the mountain.

Eery and majestic.

Adorable and not overfed.

He is sitting in the cafe window.I wonder what he is thinking?

Outside the Casablanca cafe where my husband was eating lunch.

The Casablanca with mountains in the background.

Street scene.

Stunning waterfall.

Statue of a bull in the village.

The Ministry of Education.

And last, a view from on high, looking out over the village, mountains, ocean and sky.

Thanks for putting me in a Guatemalan mood. I´m going to brew up some organic Guatemalan coffee right now!
The person in specs is your hubby I presume.
2... The Handloom takes up hard labour and endless hours to produce a piece. The 'little' the buyer pays is a 'big' amount fr them. Poor things.
3... She is pretty with that pleasant smile and shapely too.
This reminds me of a Smithsonian report on a South-East Asian country, years ago, where women walked with baskets on their head ... 'their walk was balanced and much better than that of the city ladies who slouched'.
4... For a moment I thought she was the laundress.
5... Roof of galvanized tin . . . pretty hot and cold inside.
The Cat ... 'Who the devil are you ?'
The Cafe isn't crowded.
The street is colouful and peaceful.
The Waterfall is simply beautiful..........
Why a cattle I wonder..........any religious significance ? Like in India ?..................This is a Bull..........In India it is the milk giving Cow !
Ministry of Education ...........Wonder how the schools ........or atleast the Colleges would be ?...........and do they produce Scientists like in the East: India, China, Japan, Taiwan ,,, not Phillipines and Malaysia though.
Lastly..................Scenic !
oh, organic Guatemalan coffee sounds great. It is very good of people to buy organic and fair trade coffee. I might have suddenly given up coffee in the last two weeks - I had bronchitis and I never have the craving for it when I am ill, but now that I am better I still have no cravings..Maybe I should brew a French Roast just to make sure.
John Phillipp: He says you are welcome.
Thanks Kathryn, watching thses lovely pic s in the morning makes day brighter..
love
We do have a LOT of photos from trips PRE digital camera but we have to find them and then I can scan them in. Possibly for other months:
Yucatan, Alaska, Puerto Rico, Europe - Warsaw, Krakow and Prague. I will look this weekend...
Janet: Oh yes...
Anna del C.
Author of "The Elf and the Princess"
I didn't see anywhere that showed where the pictures were taken, but I assume the lake is Atitlan?
The old colonial capital of Antigua is also wonderful, as is the historical Mayan market town of Chichicastenango.
I love the color, the scenery, the volcanos, the marimba bands playing in the hotel courtyards... Would love to go back.
I am guessing your hubby was in Guatemala City?
Tony: Yes, Attilan.
btw, were the pics taken on Fuji film? just curious.
Elsie: You are most welcome.
Anne B. Grote: Let's all go.
Carolyn: Yes.
thanks for those.
I bet your husband had a great time.
Shy ;)
ness..thank you.. that is so true...in part natives dance and seem happy for many of the same reasons that we go to dance halls - discos...or do anything else. it is not so much that we ARE happy but that we have to go through the motions of being happy just to get through life.
Sometimes we are happy or become happy. But yes the indigenous people must distract themselves as they conduct their daily business for pennies, bread and water...
What a wonderful place to visit.
melissa, thank you...
mary, thank you. yes it is beautiful..The shot of the Casablanca is great against the mountains.
I am sure New Zealand is fabulous. i've been to Australia. Did you see Luna Rushdie's travel pieces? They are in Travel She is a Gather travel correspondent.
