I am on social security and just got notice from them that begining this month they will be taking out money for medicare and I need to chose a medicare plan. Can I say no and NOT have medicare or the money taken out of me?
I was sent a notice about six months ago giving me a choice and this time it reads like I HAVE to be on the medicare and pay the premium. Doesn't seem right to me!
Help .. does anyone know?

In any event, you do have to pay for medicare. And, medicare doesn't cover everything either. You will need a supliment. AARP is one of the best. They will pick up every penny that medicare doesn't. However, the government gets us in all different ways. This is just one of them. It's around $90. a month for it. Give or take a few dollars. I hope I helped a little. Good luck. Oh, don't bother with the rx part, that is a rip off for sure, and why should you pay that premium. It doesn't offer much.
I get social security disability.... based on my work history and injury.
Good luck! Sounds like you really need it!
One of the easiest ways to get details is to call one of the medicare advantage providers in your area and ask for their information packet. Humana has one in your area and they tend to put together good educational materials (you would not be obligated to buy the plan).
Read what you were sent to see if they say anything about Medicare D -- this is the senior citizen drug plan. I don't know if it applies to SS Disab persons or not.
Untimely enrollment in medicare typically requires medical underwriting if enrollment takes place at a later date -- and they can refuse coverage.
I can understand not wanting a decrease in your SS checks, but the ramifications of not taking coverage at a time the government requires it could put your medicaid at risk as well. Your caseworker may also be able to help you with this.
