OK - I think it's settled now. After:
I said no to France because I couldn't get assigned by a major newspaper. That's really what they needed, and I don't do that. Although one major paper told me they wouldn't assign an article, but I could submit one. The only problem is they will only pay me $200, they won't buy it if the trip is subsidized in ANY way, and they won't even buy an article from me if I've EVER accepted a subsidized trip, even if this one wasn't subsidized at all GEEZ they want a lot for $200!NOW - I got an email today inviting me to Toledo Spain from April 20th (the day I return from France) until April 29 (the day I leave for Florida!) Key words were spa/gardens/culinary and, of course, Toledo, where I've never been. Of course I said no. Can you imagine having to pack for a cool France, warm Spain and hot Florida, without the chance to come home between trips? I'd definitely be living in the airports then. Besides, I might as well close my shop for good as have it sit empty for 4 weeks in Spring. And who'd do the gardening?
The Kenya trip had 400 journalists apply for six spots, so they did not pick me (I couldn't deliver a major magazine) but they are keeping me on a list for future trips. (!!) Then France emailed and called me. They wouldn't let me say no, and "twisted my arm" until I said OK. So, it looks as if I'll be in France from April 10th to 19th. An email from them today says they are waiting for my plane and train tickets to come in.
I never heard back from the folks with the Martinique culinary week beginning May 1. Good thing, because on April 29 I leave for Clearwater for 5 days of "soft" adventure - kayaking, sailing and hiking. Then I work in my bookshop through Memorial Day and leave for San Francisco for a 4 day weekend. San Mateo County is a major culinary destination. They say they are thrilled to have me.
NO - I can only do France and Florida this season - DARN!
With all the terrible problems in the world today, I'm sharing this just so we know that some good things happen - sometimes. Being in the right place at the right time, and being able to take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves keeps life interesting. Stay tuned - I'll write about my adventures in France and Florida and publish them here.

(By the way, I would simply ship one suitcase home after the first leg and have someone here send a suitcase ahead of me to the next destination---I've actually had to do that more than once. Of course, shipping cost less when I did it.)

(Oh, my, poor man, what a hard time he has, such choices!)
I have an excellent suggestion. Call the Toledo people and tell them you have a friend (ME!!!!!) who speaks fluent Spanish, having lived in Spain for 5 years, and who is familiar with Toledo, who can make the trip and do some loving writing afterwards.
