Are you sure this is a real letter and not a fake? The internet often produces what people would like to believe whether it is true or not.

Whether the letter itself is real is immaterial. The fact is that this Kern woman has no business representing a district some of whose residents she openly despises and believes to be a threat. Substitute the word "black" or "Asian" for "gay" and tell me what she said isn't bigoted.

That's incredibly sad. This letter makes me feel the same way as the end of your "Man No On Sees" film clip.

What I had to laugh at is her response when she "defended" her remarks to the press. She complained that nobody told her she was being taped and the conversation would show up on YouTube.

Apparently she's not aware that we live in an information society. When we know what Presidential candidates had for breakfast this morning, you can't assume as a public figure that anything you say or do isn't being recorded.

And that begs the question - she says these things are what she believes. But if she'd known she was being recorded, would she have kept quiet in public and just gone on espousing hate in private?

My late brother was gay and faced this kind of hatemongering up to the day he died, both from Bible-thumping Christians and from people who didn't give a damn about religion but still had enough hatred to show off. As much as I don't like her type, Sally Kern is not alone and her kind exists not just in Oklahoma. That's a sad reality that we still must face.

Scary what is spewed forth by people in power that their followers blindly accept and act upon (be they members of the same political party, students, religious congregation or simply the tag-alongs that mimic whatever opinion the alpha personality of the group of friends expresses). The hold that those in a position of authority have over weak-minded or weak-willed is terrifying. Without lifting a finger they are able to create and cause pain and chaos with simple, ignorant words.

The complete ignorance, hatred and vileness in this woman's words made me sick to my stomach. Because I am capable of loving a woman (or you love a man) we are now as bad, or worse, than those who murder in the name of their political or religious views?? It truly is comments and opinions like this that cause me to fear for the safety of my loved ones who are outta the closet, those who voice thoughts different that the majority, or take an unpopular stand on any multitude of subjects in defense of their own moral code.

And not just yes, but Hell Yes, had she replaced the word "homosexuals" with the word "blacks" or "negroes" she would be under serious attack. In all likelihood she would be under police protection for her own safety, out of office before she could blink, and under investigation by different government groups for running her mouth about the "repressed minority".

That was an incredibly powerful letter. The sentiments are sadly accurate.

Well she certainly did a good job displaying her ingorance. And I have to believe it will come back to bite her. She'll regret it, and she should. The sad thing is that probably won't be for the right reasons.

It is heartbreaking the tragedy that guy went through--loosing his mother, then being publically cut down. That hurts no matter where you stand on homosexuality. Cutting someone down verbally or with a bomb is never the loving or correct response. Thanks for sharing this letter.

I have loved this letter real or not from the first day that I read it. My family wouldn't agree with it, but that is fine. They are free to have their opinions.

Thanks for the note: although I lived in Arkansas for many years and visitted OK quite often, it is easy to forget what attitudes are alive once you leave. But they are everywhere. It is important to expose them and prove them wrong at the moment that they happen, otherwise they will just go underground and fester.
