What constitutes National News? By that question, I mean, what qualifies a news item to become national in nature. If someone is murdered in Toledo, do I need to know that, in northern California? Why was Scott Peterson's murder trial on national news, nightly? Why did that murder, out of all the murders that were committed at that time, have to be pushed in our face every night?
Let me say this another way. Putting aside all the philosophical ideas about 'no man is an island' why should I have to hear about a mother somewhere far from me, who has killed her children and herself? Or the father who kills his whole family and then himself? Or the amount of drive-by shootings on any particular night in any particular city?
Isn't the very name, "National News" mean that it concerns the nation, as a whole. Like the war concerns us all. Like senatorial actions concern us all. Like a presidential decision affects us all.
So, why do you think we get all the news from near and far? Is it to promote a climate of fear? To sell news shows, newspapers, magazines? To keep us informed? Doesn't the bad news from everywhere else just make us all more depressed? If you listen to enough news you will begin to think there are murders by the thousands, rapists under every bed, snipers around every corner.
Wouldn't it be better for the country's morale to have local news stay local and national news really be nationally important?
