On a recent weekend our family wound up with more family members and guests than adequate transportation seating, so my husband opted to rent a car for the weekend. Since I drive my Camry to Florida we always have a vehicle, but this particular weekend found us with a full house. I assumed he'd return from the Hertz kiosk at the airport with a Jeep Wrangler. It's what he and our son had discussed for days. It was, after all, perfect weather for cruising around Fort Myers with the rag top off.
Instead they returned with a bright red Hummer 3. The novelty was kind of fun...until I drove it. It reminded me of driving a large Dodge conversion van we once owned for a total of 11 months about 12 years ago. At the end of 11 months I had backed into three cars and two pedestrians, and we decided the darned thing was just too big. That's how I felt when I drove the H3. Oh, it was pretty, and I suspect I got a glance or two from the young men as I cruised along the beach. Oh....maybe they WERE looking at my daughter. Sorry. I was mistaken for a moment there.
The H3 looked like a gem but drove like a tank. It had blind spots galore and felt so boxy I could have been driving a large side by side refrigerator. My daughter, however, loved it. I about died when my husband let her drive the rental car. After all, she's only had her license since September. She drove it like a pro, and complained of none of the flaws that I found. The fact that she stands six feet tall may have given her a slight advantage over the blind spots....but it still felt boxy to me.
She now claims she'll one day own one. I wish her luck. The price to rent the foolish thing for three days was enough to buy two weeks worth of groceries. I think I'd much rather have stocked the shelves!
So for now I'll stick to my Toyota Camry. It
's easy to drive, has plenty of power, and doesn't resemble a refrigerator. I still think the young men may take a gander now and then...but don't tell anyone!

LOL Well it was originally a Humvee (a military vehicle) that could be why it feels that way .
Our son used to drool over the sports cars that go about 200 mph. I told him he didn't need a car to go that fast unless he was on a race track, because the highest speed limit on the road is 65-70 mph.
I'm rather short and find driving things like that to be uncomfortable, too. I have a Mini, and the size and gas consumption feel comfortable to me. And I even get looks from younger men, too.

The few times I've HAD to drive our van, I've driven around and around looking for parking places I didn't have to back into, lol!
Well written, as always, Kimberly.
