Nantucket Baskets

This simple splint basket is known as a Nantucket Lightship Basket because the style originated in the 1860s on the island of the coast of Massachusetts. These handmade baskets have been prized for over a century for their craftsmanship and durability. I recently worked at an auction in New Hampshire where this basket sold for $1,100.  I have seen some older ones bring even more money.  For a history of Nantucket Baskets follow the link below.

This does look beautiful, but I don't think I could part with $1,000 for it. This does remind me of a funny story when my hubby and I were moving. Does everyone remember the Longaberger baskets (I hope I've spelled that correctly)? I had received one as a gift. Well, in the process of cleaning things out in preparation for a move, he actually through the basket away. Luckily, I realized it was missing before the trashman came and the basket was no worse for the wear. That was when the "leave my stuff alone" rule was implemented. We've been much happier since...
