We have sent robots to Mars and yet one main question still remains, when will we 1st land people on Mars? A few barriers exist. First, NASA needs the most opportune political and economic situations that will be determined by our government. Further, the trip can only occur at certain intervals that put our two planets near each other. On top of that, astronauts and their equipment would be subjected to high levels of radiation along the entire trip so protective measures must be developed to protect them while in space. With this aside, it's inevitable that we will send humans to Mars. The only question is when. Do you think we'll send humans to Mars during your lifetime?

Yes, it's very "interesting" and all, but it costs huge amounts of money! Don't we have more important needs here? Like feeding those that don't have enough money? Giving them health care? etc?
Anybody heard about the "Mars Society" ; they are seriously researching how to "Terraform" Mars, polluting it with enough CO2 to generate a "human" atmosphere! Haven't we done enough damage here? Why don't we put some of that immagination and $ to work cleaning things up here?
I don't know; that's just my 2 cents...
One of the hardest things about it all is the gravity and human body situation. The body deteriorates, loses muscle mass and bone in low or no gravity. They can probably create some artificially for the trip in space by spinning the ship etc., but Mars itself only has one third the gravity of Earth as well. That puts a lengthy stay in question....?
Personally I would rather us establish the early stages of a presence at L5, far more stable than the current station the Lagrange point would provide us with a platform for Earth Moon missions to establish a moon base, ideally on the "dark" side of the moon where we could build radio telescopes free from all Earth interference.
