I've subscribed for a number of years to an online resource for information professionals based out of the UK call Free Pint. As the name suggests, the basic subscription is free.
While this is aimed at research professionals and librarians, it has many features useful to others. Because it is based outside the US, it offers some avenues for worldview more difficult to find on the US sources.
One column that consistently answers this call is titled "My Favourite Tipples", guest-written each issue. A hint from this column in the 27 March 2008 issue: Dropsend. This is a free desktop tool that allows you to send/backup folders (up to 1GB) by drag-and-drop from the desktop. There are more and more services like this cropping up, but most have a smaller file size limit or a more cumbersome interface.
If you like to know about research sites or just keep up on what kind of information is available, check it out.
