Home is where the heart is, or so I've always heard. I have to agree with the statement. Home is where your family and friends meet, feel comfortable, spend time together, where they know they have a place to go in times of trouble or a place to rest their head or get a meal if needed. But I am thinking this topic is more about the decorating or the "atmosphere" of a house and home.
I ALWAYS put photographs on the wall of family and friends... it reminds us of why we laugh and love. A home with photos displayed, shows a warmth and love for the people in the photographs, it shows that we're proud of our families, the ones we've created, and the ones we come from. I am SO proud of my 5 beautiful children and my wonderful husband, that we are all showcased in photo frames on my walls.
I hang my special quilts on the walls as decoration. To me, this says "home" like nothing else. Maybe some people find that "quaint" or even "simplistic", but, my quilts have special meaning for me. Two my grandmothers made for me, one my mother made... I have a couple that I found and bought, but, the ones I display most prominantly, were made with love by family members. They make a home "cozy" and more inviting, in my opinion.
I have a beautiful tapestry wall hanging, with a celestial theme on it, in beautiful jewel tone colors... It covers one entire wall in my living room. My 3 year old daughter's Godmother gave Hubby and I this wallhanging the first Christmas after our daughter was born, it's beautiful, suits both of us perfectly, and means a lot to us.
I think it's so important that a HOME be filled with things that are important to the people in it, things that have a special place in their hearts, because THINGS carry an "essence" or "aura" as well. If they're just "things" to you and your family, then likely, your house with feel like just that, a house... If the things you display in your home are loved or have special meaning, then it makes your house more inviting, and helps make it a home.
Above all, making a house a home, involved neatness and organization (to the level that is comfortable to you! I'm not suggesting being obsessed with housework or organization!), things that make your house more cozy or "homey", as well as, fill your home full of love and peace for your family and friends. Any house can be a home, it just takes a little love!

I am so ready to be back in my own home so that I can have all my things hanging up again. At my boyfriends apt there are pics of my kids everywhere, but not at my sister's (where I am living part time). I do carry pics in my wallet of all the people that I love so that I can look at it anytime I want.
