Still not there physically yet. I take possession of the apartment on April 1, but won't get there for a few extra weeks. I'm still working on getting my furniture shipped and my townhouse rented out. Please let it be done soon.

BTW, I believe the price of gas there is more like the equivalent of $7-8 a gallon. They have very high gas taxes in Europe to encourage people to save energy - and all the cars are teeny by US standards.

I tend toward gas-efficient cars, and generally keep them a long time (10 years for my current Civic, 12 years for the previous one). I'm hoping they've come up with some cool looking hybrid cars by the time I come back to the states.
I'm an environmental scientist working at a law firm. Given the differential between my income and the lawyers, I wish I had gone to law school as well. I think I'd be a good lawyer. [Or not] :)
I don't know how much coal is burned in China, though I have seen the results first hand (the air in Beijing was pretty bad, even in December). Coal is still China's biggest source of fuel, and it tends to be the dirty kind of coal (e.g., high sulfur). People use it for heating and cooking, as well as the big industrial and electricity-producing uses.
Add to that the fact that China's energy usage is climbing faster than any other country, and that they are making arrangements with more and more of the worlds oil producers to supplement their domestic coal, and we have an environmental and energy disaster in the making. This is where the US's failure to show leadership is going to hurt us big time in the near future (oh yeah, and there's that climate change problem we'll all have to deal with).
I actually considered law school for after I finished the PhD, then realized I wanted to retire long before I would every pay it back and break even at work. So instead I think I'll just write books or something. :)
I used to keep a low profile, but in the last few weeks have become pretty outspoken. Perhaps more than I should. But then, I do see the need for change.

ooh, low blow. :) Yes, I'll be out of the country for the next 3 years, but I do plan to come back and I'd like my country still to be here when I do. Besides, the last thing I need is to have to defend any crazy US policies while I'm in Europe (rumor has it they aren't too happy with us right now).
I too am proud to be an American. And I promise not to tell Teddy there is a Republican in his midst if you promise not to tell him that I'm from Massachusetts too (he thinks I'm from Virginia). :)
