Figural shakers are made to resemble something else. The first figural shakers to be manufactured were made during the mid to late 1920's. Salt and pepper shakers can be made of wood, glass, plastic, earthenware, stoneware, bone china, porcelain, chalkware and metal.
These shakers come in three sizes - range sets, table sets, and miniature sets.
Range sets run from 5" to 8" in height and are used on the kitchen range for cooking where larger amounts of salt and pepper are used for seasoning food.
Table sets are the nost common and are from 2" to 5" in height and are used to favor individual servings.
Miniatures are no more than 1 1/2" in height and are used for decoration only.
Figural shakers also come in many different types. Some of these are nodders, huggers, and nesters just to name a few.
Nodders are very desirable and can be very hard to find and expensive. The shakers have small extensions on each side and the shakers set in a base. The extensions one the sides of the shakers fit into notches on the side of the base, which allows them to rock back and forth.
Huggers hug or appear to hug each other.
Nester are sets in which one shakers sets upon the other.

I love theme decorating when it comes to my table especially. Need I say that I love this article? If I could I would collect all types of figural s/p sets -- oooh, how I just love for everything to coordinate, however I have far too much stuff as it is. But again, an elegant table/appropriate theme table is the one place where I hate to cut corners.
Decisions. Decisions.
Isaac Newton says simplicity is the best way. (OUCH!) He's right, of course. (OUCH, again.)
But I REEEEE-Fuse to get rid of the the crystal (one is a salt/pepper), the china, the silverware.
