In the middle of Lake Patzcuaro are several islands. The largest of these islands is Janitzio, "The place of rain". On top of the island is a huge 120-foot tall statue of José María Morelos. On the slopes of the island, the village of Janitizio. In this first photo essay I'll tell you about the boat trip, along with my daughter, Jennifer, to Janitzio.

The only way to the island is by boat. So, Jen and I went down to the pier in Pátzcuaro. The pier is home to a string of little restaurants.

And one of the popular things they serve is pescado blanco or white fish. They fry the little guys up whole. Your choice, plain or chile.

I was proud of Jennifer. She actually tried some. She says that you shouldn't bite the bigger ones through the stomach, though. "That's where the gross stuff is!"

After a quick snack we went past the strolling musicians and souvenir stands...

And over to the boats.

We bought our roundtrip tickets for a couple of bucks and were off.

On the way across the lake a pair of musicians played and sang.

A lady was walking up and down the boat selling snacks. It was a regular floating social event.

As we neared the island we could see the statue of Morelos on the summit.

Then we came up to the dock at the island.

The captain backed the boat up to the dock and it was time to get off the boat.

Great photo essay Rick, really enjoyed it~
I vividly remember the boat ride, packed full of Tarascans heading for the "Day of the Dead" festival on the island of Janitzio. That night, all night, is definitely one of the best experiences in my life. The thousands of candles in the cemetery, giant flower arrangements everywhere, traditionally dressed native people, all gathered to pay their respects to their departed friends, lovers, and other relatives. Children were running around playing, widows were dressed in black grieving, men sat around on folding chairs drinking tequila and telling stories. The priest came out from the cathedral, lit by candlelight. His voice boomed over the crowd and a hush fell over the island.
Obviously your photo essay triggered many wonderful memories. Thank you for posting it.
