colour blind
(vs1)
why should i give you more
sympathy when you're apathetic
why should i feel condemed
for misgivings of a previous oppressor
(br1)
what do you take me for
a fool for your your pleasure?
ah, what do you take me for
a fool for my colour?
(ch)
you're not colour blind and
i'm not colour blind but
you hate me for the colour of my skin
you know it blows my mind that
you see my love as crime why
do you hate me for the lovin that i give
(vs2)
why won't you you show me some compassion
when i'm so passionate
you say my love is in reverse
i'm lost in sin reviled and cursed
(br2)
what do you take me for
a fool because i love him?
ah, what do you take him for
a fool because he loves me?
(ch)
you're not colour blind and
i'm not colour blind but
you hate me for the colour of my skin
you know it blows my mind that
you see my love as crime why
do you hate me for the lovin that i-
why do you hate my colour of my-
(end)
the love i give
i love my skin
they are apart of me
they can't be sin
i am chagrined
at your hypocrisy
why have you turned on me
just because i'm white & queer
why you do you hate me- hate me
don't hate the love
hate the fear

the world would be a much better place without HATE.
You Buddhist. This one's about racial karma isn't it? The narrator is being exposed to the results of the past behaviors of his race. He doesn't feel that he should pay the price for what his ancestors did.
On the other hand, the person of color (the object of the narrator's love), feels that karma (even if he doesn't call it that) can extend forwards in time. What has been done in the past affects our current life. The person of color sees his white lover as bathed in the sins of his ancestors ("you say my love is in reverse-- i'm lost in sin reviled and cursed").
The narrator invites his lover to break the cycle of hatred ("don't hate the love-- hate the fear"), but it is unclear whether this will happen.
This is lovely.
curt, peter and april... thanx so much. glad you enjoyed.
john and ann.... interesting interpretations. very interesting. the honest truth?
this song was written in regards to the clack community.... especially the islamic and christian black folks out there who like to call me "white devil" and "faggot" and "cracker-queer..."
those blacks that tell me i owe them a break or hand-out because their great, great, greats were slaves...
those blacks who ridicule because i love someone of the same sex...
those blacks who claim i am mentally handi-cap because i can love another man...
those blacks who mock my partner and my kids when we walk down the street and call us the "fag family on their way to hell"...
this song is about double standards.
you think black is beautiful? great.
i think white is.
black pride? great.
white pride!
gay pride!
male pride!
italian pride!
german pride!
scotch pride!
english pride!
musician pride!
leather pride!
father pride!
artist pride!
romantic pride!
punk pride!
etc, etc pride!
i am tired of being condemned for being proud of who and what i am.
that is what this song is about.
If there are clues that I have missed, please tell me!
most of my gigs are "me" alone with my music pumped in from a prerecorded track. everything is written, recorded and produced by me- so, no band. that makes it very hard to find gigs at venues that cater to the rock-n-roll community. so when i do gig it is usually guest spots and events where i do not have the opportunity to talk about my music to give the audience clues.
however...
i have just taught myself how to play guitar over the past 6 months and boy, am i a terrible guitarist!!! while i can't play very well at all, i can strum enough to give myself a little background music to sing too. i am gonna try doing some "buskering" (street musician) this summer along with my youngest son. i figure by the end of summer we'll both be good guitarists and its getting some exposure and a fun way to jam out! but beyond that, i will have the opportunity to talk with folks about my music, what it means. i want to tell the stories behind my music so people understand where i am coming from.
I live in what amounts to a repressed redneck community and get the "Burn in hell you sexual deviant" quite a bit as well as the missionaries on my doorstep any time the church gets a wild hair to bring me back to the fold (ex-mormon).
Though we do not get a lot of the reparation talk from the few blacks here, there is a lot of grumbling from a handful of the Natives (1/2 our town is on the local Tribe's land). These same people who tell me I am a demon, an abbheration of nature, etc., are the same ones who scream about wanting my respect and special treatment because of their skin color or the fact that their ancestors were put on a reservation.
If someone wants to hate me, I sweetly suggest they choose something other than my skin color or sexuality.... There's so much more to me than those two little things. ;-)
After coming home from a music festival in Portland a couple years ago I stopped by the grocery store before going to the house, not really paying attention to how I looked. After a few gasps from the other shoppers I realized all my piercings were in, I was wearing my "Real Girls Kiss Girls", and I was sporting my slutted up make-up. One woman actually pushed her children behind her (to protect them from me?? The 4-H leader and school volunteer?? LMAO!!) and hissed at me that I should be ashamed, I was a bad mother. I started laughing and before I could form a response to her, my wonderful extra son pipes up with "She's MY Bad Bisexual Mother. Before you say one more word you better go look in the mirror and have a chat with yourself. Look at the example you are setting for your kids, the hate you are teaching, while she teaches us love and laughter." The name stuck, though he changed it to Bad Lesbian Mother.... Guess it has a better ring to it.
I have a few more Pride ideas for your list. LOL Mmmm.... Enjoy the buskering with your boy this summer. Sounds like a great way to bond, to get your music out there even more, and to interact with your listeners.
your kid sounds as ballsy as my eldest. some boy at school asked him if his dad was really a fag... my son answered and informed him that i was, in fact, a 'fag' and questioned him saying, "why, trying to get a date for that drunken mess you call 'father'? sorry, my dad's taken and has more taste."
straight parents' kids may say the 'darndest' things, but queer parents' kids say things that will leave you flabbergasted and dumbfounded!
Love this song. Too bad it can't be used in the political arena that is the presidential race. "pardon the pun" Again I think that some of the commentary is very heady and over cooked. This song is very simply what it is. It is ok to be white and proud. It is ok to be gay and proud. It is ok to be female and proud. etc.......... whatever you are proud of it is ok to be proud.
