Each morning, next to El Santuario de Guadalupe in Patzcuaro, a makeshift marketplace springs up.
This is different than the markets where vendors have stalls filled with produce, meat, cheese, and other goods. This is a marketplace where people bring whatever they might have and trade it for whatever they might need. Some of the people find a place on the street or in the courtyard and set their goods on the ground. Others carry their things around the market looking for what they might want to trade for.

This woman only had a small pile of blue corn and eight eggs to trade.

These women discussed what the woman on the left might have to trade for some beans.

This woman was trying to find someone interested in her freshly cooked fish. She was working on getting some fresh herbs.

A man with two hand-made stools wants a bag of corn. If I were him, I'd move over to the right and get some of that watermelon!

Patzcuaro is over 7,000 feet above. So, early mornings can be cold! The shivering man was just hoping someone would want his rooster so he could go home.

With a spot in the sun, it's warmer and shows off her embroidery much better.

If you need some tomatoes, tomatillos, or limes she might be able to help you.

She didn't have anything to trade. Maybe she already found what she wanted and was just waiting for a friend.

Fresh cut flowers. Smiles are extra.

The turkeys and chickens got a lot of attention. But, I didn't see anyone leaving with one.
Walking through this marketplace was quite an adventure. It was packed with people looking for good deals. Jennifer and I had a great time watching all the interaction. It was the perfect way to start off our day in Patzcuaro.
I hope you enjoyed the stroll through the marketplace!

I've never been to Mexico yet.
I've never been, but my wife performed in Patzcuaro during an annual international theatre festival. She absolutely loved the town. I hope to get there, someday with my wife and daughter by my side.
