In keeping with the original idea of this thread (I think).............I'll comment that the Eliot Spitzer incident is just another situation where a pompous, arrogant, Limousine Liberal got his comeuppance after alienating so many good and decent people.

Hmmmm, wonder if you'll close this thread too (BEFORE providing any proof of my alleged "bigotry"....lol) ..........after only two comments. That's the way Leftists usually do it, but I'll keep an open mind and see how you do.

Spitzer angered virtually everyone he came into contact with because he was prosecuting people who got caught doing what he was doing, secretly. That's called hypocrisy. Unfortunately, Liberal Spitzer wasn't alone in his hypocrisy - Left Wingers demonstrate that behavior daily.

Ian - the greatest tragedy of this whole mess @ Eliot Spitzer is that it should never have been illegal in the first place. As a libertarian, I believe in limited government, not Nanny Government. Only fascist want to police what a man (or 2 consenting adults) do in his bedroom - or in the case of republicans - what they do in airport lavatories :-) And this thing with the young lady should be a matter of a private transaction - like the one GW entered into with his Coke dealer 20 years ago.

As an anti-libertarian, I think prostitution should be legal, and regulated. Government regulation of capitalism should be solidly supported by those that have seen what lax regulation has done to our economy.

He should have gone after prostitution rings as Attorney General, it is a health concern, as well as unregulated capitalism.

Not to mention that the black market price is way out of my league. (sulks, and walks away)

It is not so long ago politicians were judged on the job they did rather than private lives.
My understanding of Spritzer's anti-prostitution campaign is it was direced at street prostitution which is often linked to organised crime and the exploitation of women.

It hardly fits the image we have of the very together young lady whose name was linked with Client 9. So I agree, it ought to be a private matter. If we insisted all public officiald were beyond reproach government agencies would be seriously understaffed and the people who did work for them would probably be short on flair and imagination.

You're right. Prostitution should be decriminalised and regulated along with drugs. That was the authorities could go after the big guys of organized crime.

To often our bureaucratic law enforcement agencies are encouraged to go after the easy result to meet their performance targets.

It would not have been illegal in Britain. It is not illegal to buy or sell sex. Street prostitution is illegal as is running a brothel or pimping but if a woman wrorks for herself, independently she is OK.
A bunch of government pokenoses are currently trying to have buying sex made illegal but seem to be losing the argument as criminalising men who buy sex penalises women whose circumstances cause them to make money by selling it.

And where do we draw the line? A woman whose rich lover keeps her in a nice apartment.

A pretty girl who finds a man willing to buy her a car, designer clothes or expensive jewellery to get inside her knickers?

Its a minefield.

The LA Times ran an Op Ed on the subject of decriminalizing prostitution that I thought was very good.

That is a great article from the LA Times Bert, putting forward an enlightened attitude. In a situation where prostitution is legal it is possible for women to seek protection from criminal exploitation.

Sweden's experiment in criminalising the buying of sex has been a failure as has police entrapment in some U.S. states.

I find more and more often political correctness and religious prejudice are getting in bed together. But who is exploiting whom?

We certainly do Bert and as that article says, it used to be the case that scandals to do with money involved Labour politicians while those where sex was the cause involved Conservatives.

Sadly modern scandals involve both sex and money and usually a petty and sordid level of sleaze. Everything is dumbing down, not just education.

I should dash off 500 words on the greatest modern scandal, the Christyine Keeler affair I guess.

And I can confirm the appeal of men who have a good position, are well groomed, articulate, know how to be attentive, order good champagne and are (ahem) not bad looking goes way beyong politics. Even management consultants have been know to yield to temptation ;-)
