Further proof that I spend too much time thinking about RPGs...
The price of gold has hit $1,000 per ounce.
According to the Player's handbook, one gold piece weighs 1/3 of an ounce. Now in the real world, gold coins were never 100% solid gold, but a gold alloy, but since we are talking about fantasy roleplaying where there are dragons and werewolves and trolls, we can pretend the coins are solid gold as well.
So my current character, a kobold sorcerer, has 2,100 gold pieces on her person. If she somehow ended up on Earth, that would be worth $700,000!
Silver is only around $20 an ounce. So her 200 silver pieces would only be worth just over $1,300.
Copper meanwhile is around $8.50 an ounce. She only carries about 100 copper anyway. So that is only a bit over $280.
None of this takes into account the bag of gems she is carrying.
Of course, converting all of that would be difficult, her being a kobold and illegal immigrant and all. But when you are talking about that kind of money I guess she could find someone to handle it for her, particularly with her 22 Charisma (yes, she is a very likeable kobold).
