Funny Memory

I've got a funny memory to share with you all.  Hopefully it'll make you laugh and brighten your day.  First of all I have to say that I was raised in the South, and I live in the South.  I don't however have a strong Southern accent.  In fact, my accent is pretty mild.  So one night for supper I was at a Sonny's Real Pit Barbeque restaurant.  I was with my husband and another couple.  I was ordering what I wanted for supper.  I don't really remember what I ordered except that one of my sides was beans.  I was telling the waitress this, and for some odd reason she just couldn't understand me.  I had to repeat myself like 4 or 5 times before she knew that I wanted beans.  It was absolutely funny and weird.  I'm all like, "Beans... I want BEANS.  BEANS."  We were obviously having communication issues, but I finally got her to understand what I wanted.

I am from Michigan.. I love being asked if I am from Canada when I am on the phone with say a customer service person from Florida or California or something lol.

I may have a "Northern accent"... But it's nothing compared to the Upper peninsula or Canadian ........ Eh? lol

I had a similar experience years ago in Arkansas, with the word "iron." And I remember a family friend who had moved to Texas (from South Dakota) and her son was having huge problems in school because he had learned phonics in school before moving... and was sounding out the words he heard and coming up all wrong. I specifically remember that she told us he wrote something about having "haim and aigs" for breakfast... You really don't think about those sorts of things until something like that happens, do you?

I don't know what I sound like anymore. I'm sure at one time I had that accent that Pittsburgh (PA) folks have who swear they have no accent at all. :-) But then I lived in Michigan, Florida, Texas and now Ohio.

So funny, I had an incident like that while on the phone with someone from the library.
my grandma was never understood by anyone...people always said to me "How do you understand her with that think Polish accent??"

I was like "what accent??"

when you are close to it, you don't see it. or in this case "hear" it ;-)
I am guessing by growing up down south you have a thicker accent than you realize ;-)

Sarah, I too have lived in the South all my life and never thought I had that Southern drawl that everyone accuses us of, but perhaps I do. Who knows? Well, I guess anyone that's listened to my (this is what I sound like) video would know. Anyway, that's funny that a Southern waitress would have a difficult time understanding a Southern girl such as yourself. Maybe she was hard of hearing. :-)

When I first got a job cocktailing in GA, I had the same problem in reverse... I would ask (with my California distinct LACK of an accent) what the customer wanted to drink... After getting blank stares from each one, I tried saying "Now, what kin I getch'all ta drink this ev'nin'?" and was immediately rewarded with their orders...

It is funny to see how the accents within the country can cause for communication issues. I'm from Minnesota originally, but now live in New Jersey. When we first moved here I was constantly trying to figure out what people were saying! It was the same language, but sounded so differently!
