Hedgehog Update

I think all the babies are doing fine (except the one I lost yesterday).  When I went to check on them they were nursing, so I left them alone.  Betsey is being such a good mom.  She has been through too much with these babies, but yet she still cares for them!  Here are some updated pictures. (I posted more in pictures.)

That is so great that she took the babies to care for. I used to raise Hairless and double rex dumbo (semi hairless, semi curly hair and big floppy ears) rats, and I had one blue female named Quinn. She would steal the other females babies and take them for her own. She raised twelve babies one time and if she had more room I am sure she would have kidnapped more LOL

I am glad she was so accepting of the other babies. How is the mom of the other babies? I have been wondering since you put her babies in with Betsey.

Tina, the other mom is doing okay, but she is not really well enough to take care of the babies. She did get too cold, so she is still not 100%. I expect her to be much better soon. She has a heater right now to help warm her up. I think she was trying to hibernate, which is not good for the African hedgehogs.

oh they are so cute. I use to have some but I got rid of them because it was to hard on me when they die. I gave mine to a local zoo and I can go see them anytime. Mine had babys too.. I had a cupple whit ones. I miss them. But not the mess they would make.

The white/blond ones look kind of like my old boss when he bleached his hair - only MUCH cuter! (oh did we all have a VERY hard time not laughing in his face when he showed up for work THAT day!!!).

I'm presently feeding a group of FIVE hedgehogs in my garden. Last year there were nine!

There have been attempts on some of the Scottish isles to cull the hedgehogs as they eat the eggs of some of our rarer birds. It has not been successful and last year they tried removing them to the mainland.

I have never heard of anyone having or rasing hedgehogs. Are they kept as an indoor pet? Do they stay in cages?

I find your photos and updates impossible to resist. Those photos fascinate me. I've raised a lot of animals, wild and tame, but never any baby hedgehogs. What an experience that would be!

I've never heard of them being kept as pets. In the UK they are wild animals who often deign to visit us for food, but that's IT!

Ishbel, I don't think there are wild hedgehogs anywhere in the US. The ones kept as pets are from Africa and smaller then the European hedgehogs.

I'd heard that hedgehogs were illegal to own in PA because they're native. Maybe I'm confused :)

I didn't realise they were not just part of the many animals that Europeans 'imported' into former colonies. The rabbits in Australia are just such an import which has caused major problems for the Australians - they just multiplied and can't seem to be kept under control.

Here the hedgehogs are a gardeners friend - they eat the slugs!

Hedgehogs are lovely creatures my Greyhounds don't think so, we have rescued quite a few before they have come to any harm in our back garden but you are right Ishbel they are the gardeners friend

Barbara, it may be that they compete with native animals, but African Pygmy hedgehogs are not native to North America. I don't think there is a North American relative, but I could be wrong.
