My excerpts haven't been posted in any particular order. In this one Carol is still Karin (she hasn't changed her name yet). And she isn't in Hollywood yet, but she's on her way ...

She laughed. "People say all sorts of things. Yap, yap, yap. Well, it's nice to be talking to you, anyway. I bet you thought I was so rude to not say anything to you at first, as if I was mean or all high hat or something."
Karin assured her, "That's okay. I was just thinking, myself. I wasn't talking either. It takes two. I was just thinking about - about - how to become a star."
"Oh. That's about as scarce as a hen's tooth. Maybe worse. It's hard to be a star."
Karin nodded tensely. "I know. But I gotta, somehow."
"I'm Rita Sunshine. I'm going to L.A. to sell my special exclusive suntan lotion. I make it, myself, with a special mixture of olive oil, zinc, chamomile, and a dab of coconut oil so it smells like coconut cream pie and you just want to eat it. But please don't. Oh -and there's also coffee in the ingredients that's been ground super fine from a special electric machine."
"Oh my." Karin was most impressed. "An electric machine?" She wondered if it was anything like the elaborate contraption she'd once seen in a Betty Boop cartoon in the newspaper. It grabbed things and chewed them into something else. It had said that someday people could go shopping without having to leave their homes, thanks to such grabbing machines that would reach all the way to market.
Rita Sunshine continued, "Grinds it to dust. And I'll sell tins of it on the beach. That's what the whole back seat is full of. And my electric machine is in the trunk."
"Good luck."
"My every last penny is invested in my special lotion. Every last penny. So I'll need all the luck I can get. Luck and sunshine."
"Good luck to you and me both."
"Rita Sunshine. Remember my name. Rita Sunshine. Sunny L.A. is just waiting for me with open arms. I'm sure of it. I hope. You'll see me in every drugstore and beach everywhere. I'll go national like Marvelite."
"What's that?"
"Dress shields. Didn't you know the Marvelite brand? I just used that as an example because I'm wearing them now. I got to look cool as a cucumber in L.A. if I'm going to sell my Rita Sunshine suntan lotion, so I have lots of dress shields."
"Oh sure." Karin watched a billboard for Pebeco tooth powder go by. Smile Like a Star! "Sure. And we'll be big. Both of us! You and me both!"
