I heard a tick tick tick in my car tonight while I drove down a dirt country road. I had just turned off the highway, and I was headed home after a long tedious day of unsuccessful shopping. I couldn't see well down the dimly lit road, but shadows seemed readily available. Tick Tick the sound drove me to terror. The radio played old tunes, but I turned it down and continued to listen to the sounds of the constant ticking that resembled a heartbeat. I grabbed my keys in an effort to curb the noise, but it persisted. I wondered if I should stop the car and investigate but my already terrified brain refused to listen to me. So I drove on.
I passed the old cemetery on aptly named Cemetary Hill Rd. I fumbled for my phone hoping to call my husband to find solace in his voice, but the road grew darker and the task was decidedly precarious. Suddenly, from behind me I could see an eerie glow of red light creeping steadily closer, closer. The ticking grew louder, louder ever still. My heart's pounding was the only other sound save the ticking and crushing of gravel beneath my tires.
Then, my terror grew worse as I heard a man scream, "Lady, pull over."
I turned to see a cop approach with his flashlight.
"Lady, I've been following you for near three miles with your dang blinker on and your headlights turned off. You coulda killed yourself or somebody else. What's you been drinkin'?"

I liked it a lot. You have no idea how much time I spend trying to figure out what the sounds in my house are. My washer rumbles and last night I though someone put a load in...we were having the beginning of a storm and when I saw the lightening flash in my bedroom, I knew it wasn't the washer, it had been rumbling in the distance from the storm that was heading our way! Darn, why do I have to do the laundry all the time...actually it is the one chore I like. :) Now that I have my front loader machines!!!
