Today we had to run over to Wal-Mart to get some necessities with my $50 Boomertowne gift card and it seemed like the perfect time to take along the camera! That's just one of the changes that Gather has made in my life, I now want to carry the digital camera with me at all times and take lots of pictures. I love taking pictures and I think I'm going to do a series about different areas around Bakersfield since I live here. I do have to say that Bakersfield is not picturesque in the way that some towns are but I like it here and I find that it has its own charms.
So along the way to Wal-Mart today, I snapped a few pictures both coming and going of one of the old (and now defunct) power plants that is on Coffee Road near Rosedale Highway. It's big and its old and I find it completely fascinating.
It has all those chimney's and all that metal and its kind of homely but yet, still so interesting to see. I hope that you agree.

This is the view of the power plant as we were heading NORTH on Coffee Road towards Wal-Mart on Rosedale Highway.
The weather was nice today and the sky was such a pretty blue over the power plant. You can see the smog near the horizon there though. We have some bad air in Bakersfield complete with warnings on the news to stay indoors as much as possible especially during the summer. Bakersfield is number three on the top five list of worst polluted cities. I found that information in the last U.S. News magazine that came out recently.

Here's the view of the other side of the power plant as we were driving SOUTH on Coffee Road and away from Wal-Mart.
Sometimes I wonder what people think when they see me taking pictures out the car windows. Especially when I take pictures of something so ordinary and mundane as the power plant.

Here is the view from Coffee Road as I am looking to the WEST. I guess at one time someone planted some palm trees next to the building to perhaps make it look better?
And look, the tumbleweeds from the last windstorm are still against the fence.
This is an old power plant owned by P G & E that is no longer in service but is instead in the process of being sold to World Oil Corp which will be tearing it down to make yet another large shopping complex. You can read an article about that at this link http://www.bakersfield.com/hourly_news/story/332567.html
And there you have it, a mini-photo essay of the Bakersfield power plant on Coffee Road near Rosedale Highway.
