South by Southwest (SXSW) is one of the best festivals in America today. Originating in 1987 as a battle of the bands, SXSW takes place yearly in Austin, Texas. It is also one of the largest festivals, featuring over 1,400 peformers playing in dozens of Austin venues for four days! Since 1994, it has also included a film portion - and recently, has also been including an interactive festival centered around online media. Many truly excellent bands play the festival each year - some of my favorites from this year are Grand Ole Party, The Kills, Okkervil River , The Blow, Eastern Confrence Champions, Martha Wainwright, Summerbirds in the Cellar, and Jonathan Rice.
If you are like me and live nowhere near Austin, Texas, you will be happy to know that Gather and The Current are bringing the festival to you! I'm looking foward to a lot of great articles, pictures and videos! Coverage of the festival starts in just a few days!

I LOVE this festival! For artists that are on the First Tracks contest, this is one festival you might consider going to next year.
If you live within driving distance, go this year. Just don't plan on getting a hotel room in Austin. They are pretty full.
that's good to know, thanks. I have not been in several years but it's always a crazy event.
coming from another part of the musical universe, several of my favorites from the folk and country world will be there this year too, among them Caroline Herring, Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet, Eric Bibb, and Ray Bonnevile.
