There are thieves here on Gather. Some people want to leave because this is so. As I read this I have to wonder:

It takes zero technical knowledge to copy a photograph without using the right click. Even one that has the "right click option disabled." I have done it, to demonstrate that it COULD be done, and it took me about 5 seconds. If you know this, the "right click" discussion is DOA, because it doesn't matter. So Gather is right on this one.

I read lots of stuff here that is not original, or that is totally meaningless. You get to know who does this, and so you stop reading their stuff. At least I do. Some of these people are quite popular and prolific...
There are also photographs that reappear on different people's sites - so these people too are copying - off of each other or off of the same website.

I choose not to get my knickers in a twist (ha, I learned that one in England, lol!) about it.

There are WONDERFUL people on Gather, who write great poetry, or articles, take beautiful photos, and share them. I choose to see them, read them, and am honored when they read/look at what I post. That's what it's about. We will never "clean this place up" - it's like the real world: there are idiots everywhere.

But there are many more good people. It is because of them that I am here and that I will stay.

well I don't plan on leaving over the whole thing, but I do think that from now on anything I post will have a copyright in it to try and protect my stuff. Altho I know even that doesn't stop everyone...

I haven't been on a lot lately, but this is exactly what I saw when I started reading articles. If people are stealing other peoples work, we should not support it. If we stop reading it, they may leave. I'd hate to see people going cause of theives. I'm glad to hear you are staying Cristina. I love looking at your work.

You're right when you say there are idiots everywhere. I have been seeing the articles about the thief and still don't know who this person is. I hope the matter gets resolved quickly and the "victims" do not allow this type of behavior to run them off Gather. As you said, there are some good people on here.

I wouldn't leave over this, but I plan to remove my older content and unfortunitely start watermarking everything (which doesn't really matter to anyone who can use photoshop and remove it).

I agree! I just try to comment on those articles and photos from the people who seem genuine. The ones with character, with a personal touch. I stay away from anything that seems mass produced!

Good points raised. It's totally disappointing when someone claims to have done something, blatently copyrights it as their own knowing that it was copied from another's website - this is illegal and an infringement of copyright law. It's also an insult to the intelligence of those of us who have photographed and painted for years and know quite a bit about art - knowing the properties of watercolour, acrylics, oils, etc. Don't these people know that eventually they will get caught? You are all right! I am more into Mariana's point about it being an insult to the intelligence of the viewer than the copyright issue - because lots of people seem to find "free" sites to copy off of. That may be legal, but it is for sure dumb to think people are going to be fooled for long...

Well said! I agree with you completely. It would be nice if Gather was a perfect place, and if this was a perfect world, but it's obviously not going to happen and never will. Grin and bear it. For me, there have been many, many more pros to being a part of the Gather community than cons. I will be staying and am glad you will be, too.

This is one of those issues that doesn't impact me much. I'm here mostly to respond to the work of others, although I occaisionally publish something. What goes around comes around. The thieves will get their just reward...but it's easy for me to spout platitudes when nothing of mine has been stolen. I'm sure it's very disheartening.

I agree with you, Gather is just a smaller version of the world, and there are people like that everywhere! What comes around goes around, I know people get whats coming to them!
