I posted the possibility that maybe they posted an image that did not belong to them that attracted the troll.
After see that they had posted one that was not theirs in an article I made this comment that was removed.
"I dont think its right to hit your photos that are yours but when you use someone else image that makes those who dont know you think you are using someone else's images all the time.
And you are setting yourself up for the photographer to come after you legally. I had my image stolen by a gather member so I know I would not be happy to find my photo posted in someones article no matter what credit they gave me with out my written permission. which you need to have to use anyone elses photos"
I did not think this comment was wrothy of being deleted
since the comment was removed I either hit a nerve I hope it was an accident but since this is a touchie subject for me since someone swiped one of my images. I will not be silenced by the delete function here on gather.
ah when i checked she deleted our connection, oh well guess they dont like my opinion on orginal content. I will continue to speak out against the use of images that do not belong to members who post them. geeze she sent me an email asking me to read her article I answered it and then she didnt like what I told her. So she delete our connection well her loss because i was not the one doing the trolling.
Oh well just another miss guided gather member, guess when the owners of those images posted in articles start contacting gather to have them removed you will learn a valuble lesson.

Everything is so available on the internet and it creates an attitude that if it's posted it's general use.
I'm so sorry your photo was stolen. Your work is beautiful.
That is a big concern of mine also.
Too bad the internet doesn't have a "slap user" function. . . a nice hand that reaches out from a monitor and just slaps morons silly when they do stupid things.
But I have a new plan for them anyway. I don't delete them any more. They go into a category all of their own in my "friends" (I dislike how the term "friend" has been so dilluted and coopted in a context like this. Gather REALLY needs to change that) - "Known Thieves". That way I can keep an eye on them, and when I publish stuff, I can choose NOT to publish it to them.
I won't connect with them in the event that being in their network gets them more points.
Unfortunately the attitude of the day is all mixed up. Thanks for sharing.
And you still have not emailed me the name of the person from your Image Thief article.
Altering someone's work and then posting it and getting rewarded for it is a WORSE offense than posting the work straight up.
How would you like someone to take something you created, make it look crappy in photoshop and then post it?
I know i would be mad as hell if i was the photographer!
These articles help people see what a big problem this is on gather and show how some people have ZERO regard for the work of others!
You are the one who just told people you use someone else's images. That is not my fault. This article would not have been written if my comment had not been deleted. I believe if you send and email asking people to respond to an article you may hear something you don't want to hear. I mean i could delete your comment but I will not because you have the right to your opinion. If someone expects me to write what they want to hear sorry, I do not do that. They wondered why they were trolled I checked their content and told them what I seen that may have caused the trolling.
Again I will state original content deserves a10 unoriginal content does not.
and the childish person disconnect just because I have a different view than they do since they are the one that ask for the connection in the first place.
so does what you wrote make it ok for me to take your content alter it and place it in an article I would like to know how you would feel if I did that.
I am sending you the name sorry if I missed sending it to you.
On a side note here that photo you included here is gorgeous!
Heather, while I appreciate your opinion, there is no way to turn off comments or ratings on an image tied to an article. I wish there were a way to do that. Maybe it should be proposed to Gather. I do not begin to take any credit for the handful of clipart or images I have altered and used as ICONS, unlike the people Angela is referring to. So save your anger for an appropriate particpant, thanks.
Please acknowledge that there is a difference between taking someone's original content without their permission and using an image from a site that gives permission to use it anyway you like. Of course, you must give credit to the site to make it right and not claim it as your own.
My group Variations on a Theme often uses photos from a site that allows us to use images as we like. We give credit to the site and post the images for group members to use in photo or graphics programs to enhace them. The member then posts the altered image back to the group with the info on what they did to change it.
We ask that the original site or owner be given credit on each post.
There IS a difference! It is ok to use an image IF you have permission and IF you give credit.
Bobbi i know the site the VOAT group and you guys follow the protocol for using another person's image. That site allows people to use their images without paying a licensing fee. 99% of the image thieves on here take pictures from pro photographer's personal sites and try to claim them as their own. If they actually had permission to use them, the photographers would not be angry when "we" email them and let them know their content is being used by a thief. That is a BIG difference, I agree entirely.
we who post original content get trolled all the time. I don't think anyone has the right to expect content taken from the net deserves a 10. As I said in the past its not right to troll original content. I believe all original content deserves a 10.
There are websites that do not care if you do what ever with an image, and there are websites that have free use images but you can not make a profit off of the images and you can not resell those images. And you can not set claim on those images.
But still any image that comes from the net is not original content and no matter who posts it, that will not change it
Of course I don't condone stealing someone else's work. As a regular contributing photographer, I'd be very upset if someone took something of mine BUT I'd never say someone had a 1 coming just because they put a link to something on the web and gave credit to that site. I'm sure the site is more than happy to get any of us clicking to look.
Just my opinion. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you but I don't think the person who took her article off and disconnected from you deserves to be thrown in the catagory of a content thief as you seem to be implying. That's not fair. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.
But I will say it's pretty black and white. If you used your camera and took the photo yourself, it is yours to do with as you please.
If you did not take the photo yourself, did not obtain permission to use said photo, then it is illegal to use it in any way, shape or form.
There is no argument for it... There is no grey area.
Most people simply do NOT understand this though!
Like a lot of people I've talked with, did not know that when you go get a family portrait done that later on down the road when you suddenly need a copy of it to give to someone, you cannot scan that photo, print it out and give it away. If you do this, you have just committed a punishable act. It doesn't matter that it's your family in the picture, it doesn't matter that you paid for the original. You did not take the photo, you have no rights to reproduce it!!
Thanks for commenting on My Photo
Only she and the artist knows if she has permission to use something and if she is using it without permission in writing then she is setting herself up for a whole lot of trouble legally.
I will say again unoriginal content does not deserve the same ratings as original content. I don't think it should be rated at all.
If someone is going to use an image that is not their own then how can they even get madd that it was not rated perfect 10. I mean it isn't their work so how can they be offended anyway, ykwim?
The whole trolling thing, I think everyone falls victim from time to time, but everyone just gotta get over it, you know. I mean we are posting stuff, and the reason for ratings is so that we can get critique from others to make ourselves better so you have to be willing to accept low ratings along with the high ones, most have just become accustomed to 10s on everything because most everyone only gives 10's. I do think it is sort of crap that the trolls do the low ratings and then don't leave a reason, because they don't have a good one, except for that they are playing games but that said no one should let the ratings bother them. Especially if it isn't their own work to begin with...
I have said it before, I really think that any image that is "free to use" and "borrowed" from somewhere online should NOT be able to be rated at all. If someone wants to share a great photo they found that isn't theirs they should have to make it so you can't rate it and so no one can comment either, because why should they get points for that. When I come across a photo that someone says was free to use I will not comment or rate it. Or if it is an obviously stolen or "borrowed" but not stated I will not comment and have been known to flag those images from time to time if I am in that sort of a mood... I have noticed also that some people don't put that it isn't their image in the caption, but the tag might say "free to use". Also if someone is going to use a "free to use" image, they should also still have to cite exactly where that image came from, with a link, to prove that it really came from the place they say it did..
I spent yesterday contacting a famous Italian Artist who had his art not only stolen and posted here on gather but the poster described how he had done the work.
When I called him on it he posted another photo of the same item, this time messed up with "paint" saying it was his first attempt...yah right.
I sent it all to the artist copied and pasted to a word document (the photos and the comments) and I noticed the poser removed both photos, but before the artist had time to respond. I also sent a carbon copy of my letter to the artist to Gather so there is a record.
I will not stop either when it comes to copyright.
I am disabled, and shooting can be difficult and taxiing for me! When I do get good images, they are extremely valuable to me!!!
I feel taking legal matters against these people would put a stop to this!
Does anyone know if there are any "how to" books out there on this subject?
I was able to do my divorce myself. I filed all of the paperwork and everything. If there is something out there I would love to know about it!
Like if you right click on an image you get jacked from Gather after 1 warning. The person who gets kicked off the site a few times will give up LOL!
