As I Lay Dying is a Christian metalcore band that is currently signed to Metal Blade Records. As I Lay Dying's sound is known as melodic metalcore, fusing elements of harmony with metal and hardcore music.
Formed in 2001 in San Diego, California, in June of 2001, As I Lay Dying signed with Pluto Records and released their first full-length record, Beneath the Encasing of Ashes. In 2002, the guys put together more songs for an additional dual CD American Tragedy, that was also released on Pluto Records. After considerable touring the band become an over night success then signed with Metal Blade Records in early 2003. During that time, As I Lay Dying had a short break-up. After that they impulsively hurried into studios and recorded Frail Words Collapse in two weeks. It was an amazing accomplishment, because in July 2003, this made it the band's second full-length album. When it was released, the band did an all-inclusive tour with other musicians like Himsa, Shadows Fall, The Black Dahlia Murder, By Nightfall, and other prominent heavy music bands. After the tour in June 2005, the band came out with their third CD, Shadows Are Security. Afterwards, As I Lay Dying went on the second stage of Ozzfest 2005.
After thinking about it for a while, the band members decided to put out their first two CDs recordings that were previously issued through Pluto Records. The music picked, Beneath the Encasing of Ashes, was recorded two months after the band started and their split EP songs. That EP also included American Tragedy, that was formerly put out through Metal Blade Records in May of 2006. That CD was entitled A Long March: The First Recordings.
