I just read on FoxNews.com that Natalie Cole does not think Amy Winehouse should have won her five Grammies this year because of her bad behavior.
Quote: "I don't think she deserved it. I think she needs to get her life together first, and then get the awards later."
In Us.magazine, Cole said that because she is a recovering drug addict herself, that gives her the right to speak up about this.
I never heard anything so rediculous in my life. Since when has lifestyle had anything to do with musical ability? If we held musicians to the standard Ms. Cole is suggesting, Ray Charles would not have gotten a Grammy. Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, and the vast majority of blues singers would never have been eligible. There would probably not be a rap or hip-hop category. In fact, there probably wouldn't be a rock, pop, or country category either. Rock musicians have never been known for their upstanding lifestyles. "Sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll," remember?
We, the public, and they, the industry, have absolutely no right to judge a performer by his or her personal life. It's simply none of our business. if the performer is putting the music out there, and the music is really, really good, then they deserve to be rewarded for that music.
Natalie Cole says that Amy Winehouse is setting a bad example for kids. Yes, I know many teens and young adults who aspire to look like walking skeletons, go in and out of rehab, and basically fall apart right in front of millions of people. Young people are smart enough to admire a person's music, care about that person, and still not emulate the mistakes that person is publicly making.
Can you imagine if we took Ms. Cole's advice and only gave people who had their lives together awards in any entertainment category? What would that do to the Oscars? What about literary awards? Do we only award authors who have their lives together?
Amy Winehouse is an incredibly talented singer and performer and I truly hope she will get her act together. Maybe getting these awards will help her do that.
I believe that Ms. Cole's comments may well be the result of jealousy, since she basically ruined her own career and has never regained the acclaim she had before her drug use.
Really, how rediculous can you get?
