Our house has been cold lately. It has averaged between 63 degrees and 66 degrees, rarely getting any warmer, and usually hovering around 64 degrees. Why, might you ask, are we letting our house get so cold? The answer is, we are cheap, or politely put, we are frugal.
We usually heat our entire house with the woodstove in our basement. It has kept us warm most of the winter, but now we are out of wood. I don't want to go out and buy wood, because our cold weather is almost over, and we have plenty of wood seasoning that will be ready to use next year.
We do have an oil furnace, but we haven't had to buy any oil for over three years because of the wood stove. We only have a little oil left, and with the price of oil being what it is right now, I am too cheap, or again, frugal to buy any right now. It is always cheaper to buy a minimum of 200 gallons, but at the rate we have been going through oil, it would take us about ten years to use it all. Plus, the prices typically decrease after the cold weather is over, so if I'm going to spend a small fortune on oil, I'd rather wait until I can save a little bit.
Now, back to the original question in the title of this article...how cold is too cold? Should I maintain my frugal stance and be cold for a few more weeks, or should I give in and purchase some oil or buy a cord of wood when we already have a few cords of free wood ready to be used next year? For now I am wearing heavy sweaters, which isn't so bad, but I am tired of being a little on the chilly side. And I don't want my husband or children to find me frozen to my computer chair! So, how cold do you think is TOO COLD?

Wear socks around the house, and slippers if you have them, and keep pants and a long sleeved shirt or sweatshirt on, and you likely won't notice it as Spring arrives.
If I had to pay heat, I'd be on the phone daily with the complex until they reinsulated, and figured out just why the heat doesn't blow good into the kids rooms.
BTW, the A/C is on at this moment, - almost 70 degrees here in SC!!!!
I like it cool.
For you as long as your comfortable, it is fine
We used to have a wood/propane furnace 15 years ago and I loved the wood heat - but it became very hard to get wood around here, so when the furnace went bad we replaced it with just propane.
Thanks for posting this to Best Original Photos, Art and Writing for 2008.
Until then, coats lol :D
layer your clothes and watch tv with a blanket.
really warm inside. My heat is included but I still try to save. I do
have an AC which I run from July through to September but we are
charged $20 dollars a month for usage.
