Potential was born
the day the stick
turned blue
and she stopped
drinking coffee
sipping wine
learned to like
milk
ate her vegetables
tried to sleep
at night
But he
He saw no reason
For her dream differed
He wanted her there
To laugh
To play
To be who
They were
When she refused
He left
To seek the same old dreams
While she grew
in mind
and body
and spirit
Long after her child was born

Talking about the stick turning blue - when I got pregnant with my daughter that is now 27, the very first home pregnancy test kits had just been put on the market. You put urine in this test tube with two little pellets of something or other, shook it up til the pellets disappeared, and set the test tube in a stand with a mirror under the tube. You had to leave it completely undisturbed for two hours, then look in the mirror. If you could see a ring in the bottom of the test tube in the mirror, you were pregnant, if not, you were not. They have sure come a long way with pregnancy tests!
really think this is amazing. I wish I wrote this.
This focused poem of absolute contrast, where one seeks endless carpe diem and the other grows and changes, provokes strong lyrical feeling, because of the way you´ve compressed beautifully, Gretchen, and only given us the bare bones of the script. We have to imagine the rest for ourselves.
Excellent.
