Alot of you have asked me how I do selective coloring so Ive decided to do a tutorial for you all on how I do this.
Im sure Im doing it the hard way but it works for me and Its fun! This is my first Tutorial so If I leave anything out or if you have any questions just ask. You really dont have to have photoshop to do Selective color. You can use any kind of photo software. In fact before I had Photoshop I used Picture it photo premium which was already on my computer from when I bought it. I took pictures of my computer screen for this article. I could have taken my time and saved them to make it a better quality but I thought this was easier :0)
Im Using Photoshop Elements 4.0 for this.
I first pick a photo I want to use for my selective coloring.

Next I click on The set Forground color tab at the bottom left hand corner of my screen.

This color palette should pop up. I pick a gray color to use for my black and white. then I click on ok.

Ok were ready to paint. Over on the left hand side of the screen I select the paintbrush tool and go to color replacment tool.

Now I need to set my Brush size. Up at te top you will see where it says brush. I slide it to the left or right depending on the size I need for the most or least amount of color coverage. I use a big brush untill I get around the area of color then I make the brush small so I dont get any color of the heart.

Simply start to color or paint the areas you want in black and white! Very simple and pretty fun too! :0)

Done! Here is the end result.

This is wonderful! Thanks so much!
I have to try this process
I have read so many other tutorials and they just left me all staring.
I know just enough about Photoshop to be semi-dangerous with it.
Sue posted a picture of lollipops with this article. http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977272089&nav=MyGather
I can do the selective coloring part now, thanks, but how do I get everyyhing else in the background to go away? I have a picture I would like to use for a portrait, but there is a bunch of stuff in the background that I dont want there. Any help would be great, thanks.
Sophie if there is alot of stuff in the background that you want to get rid of that might be a distraction You can use either the clone stamp tool or you can blut it.
I actually love the bluring effect. All I do is go to the Magnetic lasso tool and outlnie the background. Once that is done I go up to
Filter---blur---Gassian blur. You can then adjust the blur amount.
Bluring is alot easier than doing a clone stamp sometimes.
I'm sure many people will benefit.
I have another method you may be interested in. It's called Color Select Studio by Magicsplash.com
It's a download for only $15 and it automatically changes a photo to black and white and then you use a brush of your choice in size and opacity to re-color what areas you want. Very easy!
