Bill Griffin Sr., my father-in-law, passed away on Sunday-one day short of his birthday. I've re-written this poem again and again to honor the life he shared with the love of his life, Mary as well as their farewell . I think this version correctly reflects my feelings...finally.
THE JOURNEY
If ever there were two soul mates-
If ever two were one-
Bill, he was the glowing sun
reflecting Mary's shining sun.
They were two inseparable
in deed, in mind, in heart.
And as occurs with all of us,
they'd one day have to part.
Each knew that in the other
they'd found a faithful friend.
Thus he knew he'd see her loving face
until the very end.
Whispered Bill to his beloved
"I must now go Home."
And his tender eyes were brimming:
"I must leave you all alone..."
"I know that I must move on,"he said,
to that unmapped land -
But I think that I can do it if
I hold your gentle hand."
Said Mary to her beloved,
"Darling, I will hold on fast."
And with her tender voice she said,
"You shall have peace at last, my love
You shall have peace at last."
