According to a new study from the University of Warwick in the U.K., fruits that contain high doses of Vitamin C like oranges, strawberries, and papaya, may help with some of the problems associated with the disease. In diabetes, the body produces too many of the tissue-damaging molecules called "free radicals." Vitamin C may help "mop up" these free radicals, which are a major cause of diabetes-related blindness, heart disease, or problems leading to limb loss.
When diabetes was treated with insulin in the study (which was of Type 1 diabetics, I assume) and then with Vitamin C, the free radicals were brought back under control.
The bottom line is that whether you are Type 1 or Type 2, eating fruits rich in Vitamin C just may help prevent many of the scariest problems of diabetes in a healthy way.
