With the concussion and subsequent memory loss that my son has had, I decided a few years ago to write down his words.
I would ask him about an outing, say the one we went on today, about 3 days later. I would start with basic questions.
Where did we go?
Did anybody else go with us?
What did we see?
From those questions, we would expand into more details. After a while, he was noticing more things and able to give me even more details.
The best thing of all, I use a $1 composition notebook. And, it is exercising his brain. He'll also have these memories written down, whether he can remember them or not.
So, get started on your children's memory book with their own words!
For children three to five, maybe ask as soon as you get home or the very next day. For two and under, write down their reactions to the animals, the water, or the things that made your trip so great.
