This movie is a typical romantic comedy. Boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy loses girl, boy wins girl back. All set in different backdrops. This one is set in the beautiful Caribbean, with adventurous twists and amusing situations so we can laugh at our hero and heroine.
This film is perfect for a dreary, cold February winter. It certainly helped me deal with the 28 degree gray weather for a typical February. Because the movie is set in the Caribbean and is about diving for sunken treasure, there is plenty of skin - Matthew McConaughey's wardrobe is essentially swim trunks for 90% of the movie. Placing eye candy in the Caribbean for the viewers in a cold and dreary winter is the perfect way to help perk up your audience.
However, the movie doesn't have much more going for it. As a typical romantic comedy, it doesn't stand out in any way like the more endearing romantic comedies. There is a subplot of a repairing father-daughter relationship with Donald Sutherland and Alexis Dziena, but it's not particularly well done. It almost seemed to be thrown in there as an afterthought to justify Donald Sutherland's presence in the movie.
So, if you're sick of winter and could use a nice pick-me-up to get you through the last snowstorm, I suggest this movie as a look. Otherwise, stay home and wait for it to come out on cable.
