"A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What a man can be, he must be."
Abraham Maslow, Motivation and Personality, 1954

This sounds seductive but is it true?
Grunger Kurt Cobain named his band "Nirvana", made music, embraced drugs and then killed himself.
Vincent Van Gogh cut off his ear, painted "Crows in the Wheatfield", and then killed himself
Ernest Hemingway ran with the 'in crowd', wrote troubling literature and then killed himself
Are they, all three, at peace?
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:7
Thanks Sigriet!

You are right, Mark, there is peace in God, but different people find that peace in different ways. I can't speak for other artists, but for me, to make art is a necessay thing, almost as necessary as breathing or eating. No one can ever really know why another person chooses suicide, but it doesn't seem very reasonable to group all artists into one 'bubble" like that. Van Gogh was a very talented man, but misunderstood in his own time, as well as both mentally and physically ill. Unfortunately, it seems to be true that some of the greatest art, music and literature comes from suffering. However, we can look at Van Gogh's work and know, that for a brief time at least, he did find peace and express his feelings in ways that many 'sane" people never could.
