Last night I went to St. Mary's College (the one in Indiana) and watched the performance of the SMC Monologues. Based on Eve Ensler's most famous work, the production was written entirely by students, faculty, staff and alumnae of the college. It was a fascinating, funny, and sometimes gut-wrenching performance, illuminating the secrets of women's lives.
Monologues included "Dear Brad," a letter to a boyfriend from his girlfriend's frustated roommate. It was cute.
Another monologue, "Traumatic," was a humorous look at a trip to the doctor's office.
"Mr. Townsend" told the story of how a young woman's admiration for her favorite teacher was tarnished when he made an inappropriate remark.
"Feminist" explored why women should use the term with pride.
There were many other performances; some funny, some tragic, some inspiring outrage. Eve Ensler would be proud.
The only problem with the performance: it didn't include the monologue that I wrote, as I thought it would. Oh, well. I still expect to see my piece performed at Indiana University next week.
