The Express Check Out Lane

I was in the express lane at the store quietly fuming.

Completely ignoring the sign, the woman ahead of me had slipped

into the check-out line pushing a cart piled high with groceries.

Imagine my delight when the cashier beckoned the woman to come

forward, looked into the cart and asked sweetly,

'So, which six items would you like to buy?'

I've been on both sides of the coin. I've had one item and had to wait 10 minutes for a shopper with a fully loaded cart to get through the express lane. On the other hand, I've had the cashier supervisor direct me to the express lane with a fully loaded cart because the regular lanes were backed up and the express lane checkout clerk had no one in line waiting...only to have people with a couple items get in line behind me after my purchases were already being rung up. Once this happened, I began to be less irritated knowing it wasn't always the customer who decided to go through the line for six items or less.

I told someone one time the register locks up at 15 items because its the limit :D haha

Cute but technically (at least at Albertson's) you have to take the person no matter how many items they have in the cart.

This is funny! I had a bad experience in the other way. A checker told me to go to the express line. I was the one with the grocery cart piled high and a child chattering in my ear. This old dude behind me pointed and said "2" nastily. I told him to stop getting pissy, I was told to come here because lines were overflowing. Woman in front of me also said the same thing. So people need to pay attention!!

In most grocery stores, the item limits are a suggestion, not a hard rule. Not only do they regularly direct customers to use those lanes to free up overcrowded registers, but nobody wants to lose a two hundred dollar sale (and possibly have all of that food spoiling) by being snippy at the register - plus, most cashiers agree that their job isn't worth getting assaulted over. (And yes, a few customers WILL hit or threaten store employees if told they aren't allowed to buy their five hundred items in the fifteen items or less lane, let alone if the cashier is rude about it.) It's simpler to let the customers fight each other than to admit that there simply aren't enough cashiers to handle the workload.

Yes, it most certainly would! I won't go to the express check out even if I am only 1 item over the amount unless I am directed there by a store employee.

LOL!! I have had my basket heaping full before with 2 small children in the cart also-------and then had to go through the express lane. I was going to Walmart to do one stop shopping. With two little ones you cant be going to a hundred places. I needed a pack of cigerettes for myself, but the only lane that sold cigerettes was the express lane??? So I wasn't going to wait in line with all my groceries and two screaming kids and then go get into line again for cigs.
So do they think that people who smoke.........don't buy groceries!

I would have LOVED to say that when I cashiered, but our store policy was that we had to take anyone in our lane, regardless of what they had in the cart. There was one person who went through express checkout once with TWO CARTS full of groceries (real groceries, not happening to buy four fifty pound bags of dog food at a time or something equally polite).

I always let someone go ahead of me if they only have a few items and ihave many, it just make sence that they should go first and there is no reason why I need tobe rude. It makes people view the world differently and they can go away with a smile.

Wish this would happen more often, but the majority of people I have dealt with in retail don't pay attention to signs or even bother to look at something like the price before holding up a line just to ask a stupid question.

That's funny! I wish they would do it more often at WalMart. However, if they'd open more than 3 of their 30 or so registers at a time then the lines wouldn't overflow. Unless I have a whole basket full of stuff I go through the self-check line if there is one. It's much quicker. That is until the things starts blinking and you have to wait for someone to come and fix it.
