Well Above Average's Stella beat me to reviewing Elizabeth the Golden Age-- but she sure did a heck of a job on it. While I was composing in my head (having only seen the same movie this week) what I was going to say in the review, it seems that Stella and I agree about most points.

For those who don't remember the history -- or the various miniseries, presentations ( including THE TUDORS series that is up for contest on LA-Story.com and other movies about Elizabeth 1 and Henry VIII-, Stella neatly detailed how Henry VIII went through wives like cutting butter with a hot knife (allusion intended)-- quickly, easily and used that same knife aka executioner's axe to get rid of most that he was unhappy with.

While you might be hungering for new episodes of The Tudors -- or waiting for the WGA strike to settle and then wait even longer for more new tv shows, the best thing to do is turn to the DVDs for great cinematic efforts such as Elizabeth the Golden Age . Not only is this a worthy candidate for the OSCAR for lots or reasons, but the costumes are incredible; the sets/scene designs are amazing (check out the stained glass cinematographic sequences); and the hair & makeup are astonishingly gorgeous. Performances are exquisite-- and Cate Blanchett does a really great job. She reminds me a lot of Helen Mirren's performance. Clive Owen-- phenomenal and yes Stella he is adorably YUMMY! (words that I was going to use too) .

The cutting down of historical fact and accuracy -- like leaving Sir Francis Drake to the very end and where are the other key men in her life-- the Earl of Leicester, Burghley and Earl of Essex? This was a woman who played a man's game and kept people at odds and men at her beck and call-- and she had many other loves in her life beyond Raleigh and she never slept with Raleigh in any historical recount-- though he was interested in her. The missing historical facts do make some uneasiness about the film (especially when Drake shows up in the battle of the Spanish Armada -- suddenly). But skipping all the historical inaccuracies, overall, I have to agree completely with Well Above Average's review -- which you simply must read! Not sure you want to see it?
